Yamaha Bruin Valve adjustment
« on: April 30, 2006, 03:34:48 PM »
I just bought a 2006 yamaha bruin and have run one tank of gas through it.  The dealer said after the third tank, I'll need to have it serviced.  He said that I could change the fluids but the valves need to be adjusted at the first ten hours then every year.  My question is out of all the atvs I've own including an old Honda 110Atc, I've never had the valves adjusted. I drove that thing and wore out three sets of tires.  It still runs and has had no vlave adjustment.  Is this necessary or is it a way of lining the dealers pockets.   I hear the service is $200-300. Thanks in Advance.

The dealer didn't tell me any such when I bought my 2005 Bruin 350. The valves haven't been adjusted on it either.

I've got a 2000 Yamaha Kodiak 400 and was told the same thing when I bought it new.  I took it in for its first scheduled service (which was included when I bought it) and when I asked the service tech what he did, valve adjustment was not mentioned.  I think it is more of a warranty thing.  I'd do it during the initial warranty period if I were you so if you have a problem, it does not give them an "out" on your warranty.  Since then, I have not had mine readjusted and it is running fine for 5+ years now.  I'm going to take it in for a checkup this summer though before leave for an extended hunting trip to CO this fall, primarily to get it jetted for high altitude operation.

Thanks guys, I just ordered a service manual from ebay. I think I'll just do all the service at home.  $300 to service an atv is crazy.

I think most of the OM's will say to ahve the valves adjusted at the first service period.  They may not actually neeed adjustment, but even my motorcycles said to have them adjusted at the first service.
