Newbie Q... What's a good .22 for accuracy?
« on: May 01, 2006, 10:04:46 AM »
Hi All,  New to this site and like the flavor.  I've been having a ton of fun lately shooting my new air rifle (in the basement) since it's so accurate.  I have a pistol and shotgun, but no rifle.  I'm thinking .22 is a good economical way to start before moving up to a .223, and I'm hoping you experts out there can help me with some brands and models.  I'm looking for something reasonably priced (<$400?) that's reliable and accurate.  Would that be bolt-action probably?  Anyway, all help and info will be appreciated.  Thanks to all.

Look at the CZ line of 22's. In my opinion, the best made most accurate (New) rifle for the money you will find. The basic model can be found for less than $200 sometimes. I have the 452 American. It was very good out of the box, and with a few simple tweaks has become my 2nd most accurate 22 (And I have several .22 rifles).

You can pay a LOT more for a 22, but unless you're a serious target shooter, the high-dollar rifles are really not worth the extra $$$ for most people....

Thanks folks, much obliged.  I don't need to spend a ton of money at this time, just enough to get a feel for it.  I'll know soon enough where I need to spend more!  Thanks again.

The CZ's are a good choice. I just recently bought a Savage MK II with heavy barrel that is surprisingly accurate though. It would give a CZ a very good run for the money and they sell in the $200 range. If you get one, do yourself a big favor and get the laminated stock and not the crappy plastic one. I made that mistake and now have a Richard's Microfit stock on order.

If you would be interested in a lever gun Henrys are accurate and a nice gun. They can be scoped too but some do not like scopes on a lever gun but a compact scope on them does not look that bad.  Jim

T/C Contender if you are happy loading and shooting one shot at a time.  A new barrel for $200 or less if you buy used would move you up to your 223.

I get the Contender out if I want accuracy, but sometimes use my 39a or Remington 572 if I am just wanting to kill a tin can a bunch of times.

I think a better question would be which 22s don't shoot well. You may need to try out a few different 22 loads, but unless you are doing serious silhouette competition most 22s are pretty fair shooters. The cheaper guns will be limited by their triggers, but can still shoot well. Marlin 22s are pretty good for the money and are available everywhere. The first 22 I bought was from Sears (made by Winchester) about 40 years ago. I still have it and it still shoots great. I had to replace the bolt due to wear about 20 years ago - the gun has been shot a lot!

Thanks much.  A wealth of information.  I'm going to go shopping and see what deals come up.  I hadn't thought of the Contender, but that's a nice piece.  I must say I'm kind of leaning toward it right now!

Hard to beat a CZ.  They shoot with a lot of the more expensive guns.

For the money, CZ's are one of the most accurate rimfires.

The Savage Marks 2's are junk, and they have lousy service.

According to a Gander Mountain gunsmith Ruger and T/C have great service while CZ and Remington's isn't. He wouldn't have a Remington 597. and agreed that the Savage Mrk II's were junk.

I had a Henry 001 which had a trigger that wasn't safe.

also , if you dont mind oldies, go to a gunshop, and almost any old remmy winny marlie, mossy will all be nice and accurate, including old savages. Mossbergs are really the stars of the bunch, with some really unique designs when it came to making 22's, their sites, and their stocks.

Picked up one of those a couple weeks ago, and already put a Hogue stock on it (nice)  Fun, but in .22lr pretty short range.  I think I want something in .17HMR to reach out a little more, plus bolt action accuracy.
