Today Neff Cannons shiped 5 boxes of books, total of 151.34 lbs.  There is 120 plus books. Shiped via US Mail.

We can thank my daughter and son-in-law for gathering the books.  I can remind the high school principle of our project and see if they still want to gather books for the Zulu kids.

I was headed to a meeting this afternoon and popped into the Mail room and there were 8 boxes of books.  I was running late so don't know who sent them or how many there are yet.

You folks are awesome!!!

We have decided that we are going to divide the books up and take some to Ulundi and some possibley to Eshowe or some other Zululand library.

Thanks folks for helping with this project!

As long as the books keep coming I will find some place for them, and beleive me there are places for them.

I will be taking a trip up to Ulundi this morning to deliver the first batch of about 1000 books.  Should have some pictures tonight.

We still need more books. We are locating a couple of other libraries in need so keep them coming.

First Delivery of books to the Zulu Kids
« Reply #44 on: October 18, 2006, 07:48:58 AM »
This morning we loaded the car up with as many boxes of books as we could get in and drove to Ulundi to deliver the books you folks have sent for the Kids in Zululand.

The library at Ulundi serves about 300,000 people.

The library has an annual operating budget of R400,000.  The Rand was trading today at 7.5 to the $ this morning. That is about $53,000 USD. That money has to cover salaries, maintenance, utilities, improvements and books. That doesn’t leave much room for new books.

This is the main library floor for reference and non fiction. Final exams are going on right now and the high school students were busy writing and researching there papers.

This is the children’s section.

Remember this is a library that serves a community of 300,000.

The Library was very grateful to receive the books.  They also identified two other libraries in Zululand in need of books.

So folks please keep the books coming.  Talk to your friends and family, ask them to gather books.  Talk to you children’s school teacher.  Mention it  at your church. As long as I am here in South Africa I will continue to gather the books and get them to the kid.

Is this description a case of political correctness or did you not tell them of the source?

What I told them was that i solcited all my friends and family by email as well as posted on two Cannon boards an four gun boards on the internet.  I don't think it had anything to do with PC just basic wordsmithing.

If you remember I set an intial goal of 1027 books and nobody every asked me how I came up with that number.

Before Cannons, my passion is Martini Rifles.  I first posted this book drive on the Martini Boards, then here.  Perhaps the most predominate caliber of the Martini is the 577/450 in the Martini Henry.  577+450=1027

I remember seeing it, but putting it into the category of "it really should be some other number but came out 1027 because of lateness-of-night or typing skills" and was politely ignored.

Little did I realize that it was a TRAP to see if anyone was a) reading or b) alert/intelligent enough to spot a wierd number and either raise the question.

GOOD JOB!  Have you considered transferring to the intelligence community?  There might be some openings there.

Another small box of books heading your way. Sorry, but this is probably the last box I can send.

Ed, in some ways I must agree with your wife.  I am greatful to you for every single book you sent, 747 of the 1492 books received so  far. I thank you and your wife from the bottom of my heart for your kindness.  There are some very poor kids who are going to have a better chance in life because of your genrosity.

The others of you who have sent books, your generosity is as greatfully appreciated as Ed's,  as every single book cherished

No how about the rest of you can't you send just one book!

Delivered 300 more books today to St. Augustine's Catholic School in Durban.  The books are stacked on the table in the picture.

Now this library looks like it is pretty well stocked with books.  But look closely, you are seeing an entire school library to serve 700 primary grade children.  Look closer here is what the books look like!

This isn't just a small section of tired worn out books, but all the books in the library look like this. The kids have read the words right off these books. I wish I could have given them more.

St Augustine's in a public school attend by the children of the working class--the maids, gardeners, janitors of Durban.  Parents pay school tuition.  The Government does provide R100, 000 that's R142.86 per child per year.  One U.S. Dollar equaled 7.11 Rand  at this morning’s exchange. So R142.86 is $20.09. St Augustines is celbrating it Centanary year this year.  We learned of this library from one of the staff at the Consulate.  He attended the school when he was a child and is very aware of it's  needs.

I will be going next week to a library up the North coast and will deliver about 300 books to another Zululand library. That will leave us just under 300 books that I will be taking to the school at Isandlwana at Christmas.

I still have two more schools and a Zululand library that need books.  So if you have some books please send them right away.

I left something very important out. The reason that library looks so bright and shiny is they just got a grant from the U.S.  for new equipment but  the grant doesn't provide for books.
