Two boys nipped by coyote in Seattle suburb
Associated Press — April 28, 2006

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Two small boys were nipped by a coyote in this suburb east of Seattle, and state wildlife officers were setting traps to try to catch the animal.

Jacob Town, 4, was bitten in the bottom Tuesday evening while playing in his front yard while his mother was working nearby. About an hour later, 18-month-old Tristan Bec was nipped on the ear and scalp as he played with his brother at a school playground.

The boys were released from hospitals following treatment for minor puncture wounds and scratches. They were given rabies shots as a precaution.

And there seems to be more.pets are being eaten at an alarming rate also..he he he..

Cassandra Town said her son told her a dog had just bitten him. She didn't realize it was actually a coyote until a commotion arose down the street when an adult neighbor reported being nipped.

Rachelle Bec said she was about four feet from her toddler and had just turned her back to get a bottle of water from her stroller when the coyote pounced.

"When I turned back the coyote ran so fast and jumped on him and started to bite his ear," Bec said. "I turned around and threw my water bottle at him and it kind of startled the coyote."

Capt. Bill Hebner of the state Department of Fish and Wildlife said the attacks were the most recent of five confirmed coyote encounters since late March. All likely involve the same animal they were in the same area, he added.

Hebner said he's never deal with a coyote biting incident in the region before.

"It's rare here, but it is going on in the western United States," he said. "It was just a matter of time. I expect this to be recurring problem for a long time."

What a great shot..and coyote hunter..

Coyote shot after Eastside attacks
By Peyton Whitely

Seattle Times Eastside bureau

ALAN BERNER / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Sgt. Kim Chandler of the Department of Fish and Wildlife shows a local television crew how he drew his gun and shot a coyote along an Eastgate trail on Friday, three days after a coyote attacked two Eastside children.

Three days after a coyote attacked two Eastside children, a state Fish and Wildlife agent shot and killed a coyote along an Eastgate trail Friday.

The agent, Sgt. Kim Chandler, said the animal was probably among those threatening people and wildlife in the area.

On Tuesday, a 11/2-year-old boy was bitten on the ear while he was playing under the supervision of his parents at Eastgate Elementary School, and later a 4-year-old boy was bitten on his buttocks while playing outside his Eastgate home. That led officials to set traps for the coyotes and to a heightened effort to look for them.

Chandler said he saw a TV newscast Thursday evening that included a video made by a man with a cellphone video camera. The film showed the man's own encounter with a coyote.

Chandler immediately recognized the area because he had just been there Thursday morning scouting possible places for coyote traps.

The trail is at a dead end of Southeast 37th Street, a few hundred feet south of Interstate 90, leading from a motel parking lot east of 150th Avenue Southeast.

Chandler returned to the area early Friday morning. He used a device known as a predator call to draw the animal out. As he was walking back down the trail, he saw a coyote.

The animal stopped on the trail, he said. "He absolutely saw me. He had no fear of me whatsoever."

The animal approached him, Chandler said, and he drew his .40-caliber Glock semiautomatic pistol and finally decided to fire.

"I tried for a shoulder. I missed," he said.

Then he fired again, and missed a second time, explaining that he was trying to prevent hitting the animal in the head, since the brain is used to do rabies tests.

The animal then nearly disappeared but then "peeked out from behind a tree," and Chandler, from about 25 feet away, tried one last time — this time successfully. "This was just blind dumb luck that I was here," he said.

The department later announced that no rabies tests could be done on the animal because there was insufficient brain tissue remaining for the procedure, despite Chandler's efforts. Wildlife officials also are continuing with their efforts to trap and control other coyotes, Chandler said, and it's expected that there are several of the predators in the area.

Chandler noted that the animals eat cats and pet food and warned residents against providing any food for the animals, but he also added that the terrain is ideal for coyotes and other predators.

I read somewhere recently (cant remember where?) that there was a small boy lost in the deep woods. The searchers looked for him into the dusk to no avail. One of the searchers on a hunch started to follow the Coyote yips and howls that they had been hearing as dusk descended. They eventually found the little boy by following the noise of the pack that must have been on the trail of him.

I have no doubt that the Yotes would have made a move on that boy. He was a very little boy from what the article said and would be no match for even one full grown Coyote.

My Girlfriend ran off a Yote once that was sneaking a treeline near a swingset her daughter was playing on. From her vantage point she said the Yote was intently watching the little girl while doing its stalk. Wish i would have been there as it would have been the last stalk the sob ever would have had.

We have lost many fowl on this property to the Yotes. This Yote that my GF ran off is a big boy! I jumped him one time in the back paddock when i was unarmed yard working. He's the size of a german shepard and very wary. He will sun himself in the back yard while i'm at work and haul ass when my truck comes down the drive. I have taken the Foxpro and called back there but have not brought him down yet.
I shot a smaller one by this means and a Red Fox, but i'm still after that smart sob. I will get him sooner or later.

I do not trust Yotes around small Children and suspect many attacks, especially older ones, were not reported.

Take a gander over at varmintal.net he is an old school coyote hunter that puts these attacks on his web-site.

Black Wolf ,

I like your attitude w/getting that coyote ,ones that sneak around like that one are trouble!
My bro-inlaw had two that came around their place and grabbed chickens and guinea fowl pretty regular.
He wanted something more than a 22lr but not a centerfire rifle,i showed him my 17hmr.Shot an ear of corn w/it at 150-160yds and he was sold, called me the next day to ride to bass pro and get one [savage].
It took him a couple of months and one day he was in the barn and heard the beagles barking and watched where they were looking.
They trotted right up the pasture into the yard looking for a meal ,it came in the form of 17gr v-max.He shot from in the barn and hit one through the ribcage, the other one ran right up the driveway and stopped trying to figure out where his buddy was-bang number two down w/a neck shot.
Well best of luck and kill every coyote you see--i do!! Mike

Wow, Mike. Just about every other hunter I know who hunts yotes with an HMR use the 20gr HP rounds, claiming the V-Max 17gr round don't have the penetration to get the job done consistently. What are your views on this?

Ol Mike. Your brother in laws place sounds just like this. The yotes got all of her guinea fowl, so she got chickens and the yotes got the lead rooster. After that we locked em up and i started really watching the property. The yotes never come around while i'm there, its only when i'm at work or gone and the GF's is there, then they are laying in the yard, sniffing around the barn or running up the driveway and thru the yard. Burns me up to no end! One time the big one was out in the yard sunning himself the GF went out on the back deck yelling at him and he just ignored her and didnt budge. This scared her and really pissed me off because he seems to have lost his fear of people and if thats the case, that sucker needs a dirt nap! This happened last year and i havent seen any yotes and neither has she. Shes had the Chickens out with no probs so far so maybe the yotes moved on but i doubt it. All of a sudden one or two fowl will come up missing and it will start up again. Congrats to your bro in law for getting those sobs and hopefully that will be the last of his probs. The 17HMR is enough when put in the vitals. I shoot one too.  :D

What some here seem to miss is the abnormal behavior of the animal in question.  Was it aggressive and fearless because it was somehow "evil", or was it diseased?  Encephalitis (inflamation of the brain) causes marked behavioral changes, and rabies is such a disease.  It is highly likely that the animal in question was rabid; the authorities seemed to think so too as they wanted to test the brain.  Since the "hero" fish cop destroyed the brain, no test could be made - the children had to undergo the unpleasant rabies injectiions, perhaps without reason.

Rabies is nothing to take lightly.  Last week a local youth succummed to that disease, which he obtained through (apparently) a bat bite.  Once symptoms appear, no humal lives regardless of the treatment.

Apparently there is a single recorded case of a young girl who did survive after receiveing an experimantal treatment.  The local youth supposedly received the same treatment, but it was unsuccessful.

Good Point.
Also to be considered is that in some parts it has been found that  people will feed the yotes and eventually they are not scared to come around.
If no food is present, they will stalk & attack young children as they(the yotes) are an opportunist pure & simple.

This has been the case in several incidents and the people are encouraged
To yell at the coyotes or even throw something at them at every opportunity to get them out of the neighborhood.

Game Stalker ,

I think i wrote on another thread here recently of the varmint hunter that literally shot dozens <--plural- w/ the 17 gr v-max.
He would send one through the ribs behind the shoulder and put another one in them as they spun around and bit at the wound.
I've killed coyotes ,many praire dogs ,crows ,squirrels ,jackrabbits w/a 17 gr v-max.Anytime the debate comes up the bottomline is shot placement that is the key to anchoring a bigger animal.
I didn't reccommend the 17hmr to my bro-inlaw -his mentality was i don't care if it kills him on the spot.
The first coyote he shot actually ran a short distance 30-40yds and piled up second flopped on the spot.
His dad and uncle are both having problems w/ coyotes -his dad got a .204 barrel for his t/c encore.

Black Wolf ,

Coyotes can be real hard to hunt in the east getting permission on alot of land -in order to be able to give them a go is a lot of work.
I always keep a gun ready to go -slide in the clip and start shooting.
Best of luck .Mike

:cb2: A girl was attacked on a ski slope in Colorado last year. She went down and was laughing and giggling, and then her friends heard her laughter become screams. It just ran out from behind some trees and pounced on her leg. When the other skiiers approached, it ran off.

My sister's neighbor was walking her dog in a park in Louisville, CO (right outside of Boulder). It was running back and forth across the trail, and then it ran back, but not forth. When she we looked into the tall grass to see what it was doing, she saw a coyote eating it. It had staked out the trail in the park for easy pickins. Of course, I don't know which one I hate the most— coyotes, or little yap dogs!
