hvy weight projectiles for:454Casull,460S&W?
« on: May 03, 2006, 08:45:21 AM »
What heavy weight projectiles[jacketed or cast] are suitable for 454Casull [Ruger Super Redhawk],Taurus Raging Bull],460S&W[S&W 460xvr]?
Use:close quarters bears.
I'll be handloading.
And yes I know a 375H&H or 12ga w.Brenneke slugs is a better choice.
Thanks.

My guess is that's you'd be well served with anything between 300 & 400 grains (that is if any handgun serves well against an enraged charging grizzley).

Depends on the species of bear. I like a nice LBT hardcast with a WFN profile for all my handgun and muzzleloader hunting.
On black bears under 700 lbs or so, I like a nice 300g hardcast at modest velocity, ie. 1300 fps.
On the bigger species... a nice 350g hardcast at the same speed, if, meplats were in the .340"-.360" range on either. With smaller meplats in the .300" range I would bump the velocity up to around 1500fps or so.

dont care for anything heavier then a 350 in the 45s. You start taking up to much case capasity if you go any larger. I like them best at around 300 grain

I have to agree, even in my 460 Mag I prefer the 300 gr.  :D

I don't have a 454 or 460 mag.  But I have taken more than my share of black bear with a 300 grain lead bullet in 44 mag. I would think, you would get just as good and probably better results with them in 454 or 460. For black bear I like hard cast lead. But I have also found that the XTP's are one of the few jacketed bullets, that do not come apart. I don't know if they would at 454 or 460 speeds.  Maybe one of the others could tell you more about them at higher speeds.  :D

I have heard that the XTP's work great at MOST pistol velocities.  I have shot one smallish whitetail at 1800fps. (carbine).  This was muzzle velocity, the deer @ 100 yds.  The bullet, a 240 gr. XTP, barely nicked a rib going in, and stopped on the rib on the far side.  This in a 137 lb. deer.  I have heard this bullet penetrates fine at under 1300, but faster than that I know it might not always.  Either a 454, or 460 may push the regular XTP too fast.  I believe they make a Magnum version, usually in the heavier weights that is tougher.

I like a 260gr. Nosler partition in .454 for stuff up to and including Rocky Mtn. Elk, they work great!

First of all, you always want hardcast up close for bears.  I use cor-bon 335 grn cast for my .454.

cast bullets, especially buffalo bore, the corbons ( i love the jacketed penetrators) and we've got a neat alloy that has been in the works for some time that will not break up and handgun velocities that i will reload once some molds with good enough meplat are either made or found.  that said the hornady 300 gr. or 240 gr. xtp mags work great on deer, elk and hogs in the 454 and 460.

For me Black bear 300gr WFNGC in my 454 would be more then enough.
For Griz/Browns I'd go with 335/345 gr WFNGC at 1500 fps or better. Any heavier then that the recoil becomes very brutal and velocity /accuracy becomes an issue as well. You want max power with control, cause if you miss your toast!8)

I might point out that bear HUNTING and bear DEFENSE are two different propositions!  An enraged bear with a full load of adrenalin coming in fast calls for a 10 or 12 ga. slug.  A bear peacefully cleaning up a berry patch is another thing altogether.

When I was in South Africa in April - I used Frontier 390 gr./1250 fps. - which penetrated very good.

In August I will try the similar bullet on a buffalo - I hope

I will report you about the result (if I come back  :-)

I just got some 300grn jacketed flat points for my .454, seem to be some good ones, I had been using 335 grn hard casts, but I don't think a bear would tell the difference, casts slow in the barrel a little bit.  Still have some 335's, and would still use them.  I just found some 320grn casts for my .44mag, which I'm gonna use, was using 280 grn jfp.  If you are looking into bears, 300 is a good place to be, don't go too much less, but you won't gain a lot for going too much more.

Sverre A.----how did you work out the accuracy problem with heavy bullets (in your FA 83 in .454 Casull?) Do you or anyone here on the forum have any accuracy reports on the Corbon heavy loads? So far I have only used the 320 gr Penetrators and the 320's gave accceptable but not great accuracy at 75 yds compared to Hornady 300 gr XTP hand loads----I am tempted to try the 360's or the 335 hardcast load.  Will they shoot accurately from the FA barrels with their slow twist rates? Comments?    Gene

A company called Northwest Custom Projectiles has some interesting designs in their 45 bore lineup.  Same website as the name.  HTH.  Mikey.

If the rain quits by tomorrow morning, I'll try to put a 357 grain FP from Hunters Supply over the chrony.  I've got 27.0 of H110 behind it. Any velocity over 1200 fps should not have a hard time going through a bear.

I clocked 1563 fps from that load.

This is out of a 7.5" FA .454 Casull.
