17 days and counting until my next Deer Hunt
« on: May 04, 2006, 03:42:57 AM »
Hi All,

Yep I have got a days stalking booked after Roe Buck in 17 days time. So at present I am trying to decide which rifle to take with what ammo. I have a few rifles with which I have never taken a deer yet and I am thinking about taking one of them. Heck even though the .270 Winchester is the chambering of my very first Deer rifle (BSA CF2 Stutzen)I have never taken a Deer with that cartridge.

So wish me luck as I am really toying wiht the idea of carrying one of my .270's.

It seems pretty hard to go wrong with a .270 on a deer hunt. The 130 gr bullets are fairly destructive and roebuck are small (as you would know more than I), so I'd try for lung shots rather than shoulder shots.

My advice was worth what you've paid for it.

Well thankyou for your advice  :?  Now I have the following cartridges to choose from:-

6.5x55mm
.270 Win
7x57mm
30-30 Win
.308 Win
30-06 Springfield
.303 British
7.92mm (8x57mm)

Now so far I have taken Roe with the 6.5x55mm, 7x57mm, 30-30 and .308. The .303 has taken one Fallow, the other three have yet to be blooded. Did a bit of scope swapping so the Majestic Featherweight now has a Alloy Linsenfeld 3-9x42mm scope and I also have the sporting aperture sight I can take. The body remains on the rifle but the windage arm has to come off for the scope mounts to fit.

Sunday I am off to the range to sight it in and try out the loads, I will also try out the .303 and a 6.5x55 and I have some 30-06 to test as well. The .308 is ready to go with it's 135 grain loads so all is not loast
