Problems with barrels on TC Encore
« on: May 04, 2006, 05:18:14 PM »
I purchased a Encore with a 50 cal ml barrel in july 05.  ordered a 375 H&H barrel from midsouth and a 338/06 barrel reom the TC custom shop.
The ml barrel would shoot 8 inches low at 25 yards with a leoupld scope at max elevation.  The 375 barrel was not much better. Sent them both back to the factory.  The 50 cal ml was replaced (did not say what was wrong) and the 375 barrel checked out. Bothe the 50 cal and the 375 are doing fine now. The 338/06 is a differnt story.  The first shot will print from 4-6 inches high and 1-2 inches left.   The next shots will be right on target.  Bellum said to wrok on the forarm  I relived it from touching the barrel except at the screw points.  The only change was the point of impact.  It now shot 2.5 inches low, with the first shot wild high and left.   I sent the 338/06 barrel back to TC may 1st. Any ideas what can cause this?

Problems with barrels on TC Encore

There are several possibilities.  One is that the barrel has a major stress issue that responds to a slight amount of heat, unkinking itself after the first shot.  Another is that the bore finish reacts with the first shot out of a clean bore, then settles down for the rest.  There are others.  Is the bore oily for the first shot?  Is the high shot the first out of a clean bore, or the fist shot out of every string?

The first shot is always high and left.  I have tried it both ways.   After cleaning I dont oil it.  The one thing I dont know is how long it will stay on target after the first wild shot.  I was Ram and Hog hunting in Texas in Jan.  Sighted in about 1:00 pm First shot high and left next on target.  Killed a hog at 140 yrds about 6 pm (one shot in the neck).  Shot my Ram the next day about 2 pm. (40 yards in the neck) It seemed to be on target at that time.

I have a 30/06 Encore barrel that shoots high on the first shot with a clean or dirty barrel.  If you find a fix for yours, let us know.  It seems strange that a single shot would warm the barrel enough to do this and not do it on subsequent shots.

T/C recieved my 338/06 barrel on May 1 st Sent it back to me May 3 with no explanation of what had been done or how it shot.   Why are we allowing T/C to get by with this? I am going to call them Monday but I don't expect to get any real answers.

muzzle loader shooting low

This will happen for some goofy reason with any scope over about 6 power. The solution is easy though, use burris signature rings and jack the back end up about .20. They sell inserts for that reason. There are many posts on this over the years.

With modern engineering, you would think a well funded designer could make a barrel and the location of the scope base mounting holes line up so that a mechanical zero could be achieved.

I too had to shim my base on my 50 cal MZLDR barrel.   :x

To the last two replies

It is not a scope problem.  The problem is the barrel will not group betteer than 4-8 inches.  T/C said there was nothing wrong with it after firing it twice.

I have a blued 24" 6.5 x 55 encore barrel that likes to put the first shot out of a clean cold barrel 2.5" high and left at a 100 yds.  I figured it was due to the oil residue that increased the pressure slightly, along with the  left hand twist.   I just hunt with a dirty barrel.  My 24" stainless 7mm-08 heavy barrel from the custom shop does not seem to exhibit this trait.
