Yup we got hacked last night. I've fixed what I can but it's still showing on every thread on the site. Matt is going to try to write a program to remove it or we may be able to get a back up from our host that is say 24 hours or so old that we can replace and only lose a few posts but get rid of the war message.

Give us a little time and we'll try to get it back to normal.

In the mean time anyone can edit their own post if they started the thread to remove it. So can moderators on their forums. I'll delete some as I see them today.

Hopefully Matt will find a mass fix soon but until then members and moderators can help by deleting it with an edit.

I sure wish you could get the bastard who did this.  More important though is can you prevent it from happening again?

The truthful answer is both yes and no.

Yes we've closed the back door that was used this time to do this. So it can't again be used to hack us.

But in truth you cannot stop a really good hacker. No one can, not even the government with the best security money can buy is able to completely stop them so for sure a small place like us can't.

But we're thinking seriously about dumping this PHPBB software. It just has too many security weaknesses and it's about the most popular free software available which means it's in use on millions of sites so it's a real target for hackers. We're looking into what options we have to move to another software even if it's a paid version to replace this one. Dunno what we'll end up doing.

But no matter what we do we'll never completely stop hackers. That cannot be done.

Sad but true........I guess you can feel a little lucky that  you have a site that's popular enough to be a target for hackers.......???? :?
