Interesting post Yotero. That talk you had with fishing friend  is  worth 100 yrs trapping experience plus.  If only more people would sit and LISTEN and apply what works for his area and type of trapping.  Ahem  did you catch any walleys?? :-)

It will work just fine.  I know of a fox trapper from the 70s that regulary took in numbers over 100 fox just after regular work hours.  The fellow used the left overs from butchering chickens and   used plain dirt holes.  The guy just put in freezer and took out when he needed some and didnt taint it.

What!!!???? He didn't taint it first!??? That is just not right. We've never done it that way before. How dare he buck the system and try something new!!!!
Just kidding.
Heck, I use mostly fish, because its cheap when I can find deals in the offseason, or, because its fun to fish with my kids, too. But when I run out of bait during the season, and panic mode sets in, you would be surprized at what you can find in the garbage or in your fridge that works for trapping predators. Wow, the list can be as big as your imagination. Cheese, eggs, liver, old fish bait, steak bones or gristle, got one once on 1/2 a bacon double cheeseburger, too. (hold the mayo, please, and yes no fries either)

Great post...glad I checked it out. Reminds me of the "old days" on T-man. I liked the thoughts on dangerous or alarmed odors of humans and odors of the CANINE lures used at the set.
Which brings me to my question...IF we open a bottle of concentrated lure/bait/urine are we not contaminating our clothes pants etc with that smell? Now how can we set without dragging those pdors along with us?
Just another point as far as contamination. I always contand that our truck keys and door handles are probably the greatest contaminated part of our equipment...think about that for second.

MChewk:
One is bound to become somewhat contaminated during the course of a day. All one can do is begin the day with a clean body and clean clothing so the odors don't keep on accumalating on one's clothing and body to an alarming level.  I've smelled trappers that I could smell their sweat, cigarette/cigar smoke and rotten bait juice for 30 feet so imagine what odors they left at their coyote sets after 10 minutes of making a set. Then these guys thought I had some secret lure because all they could ever catch was coyote pups and very few of them. Ace

Okay on last posts, makes one think .  Here is another one.   When a man  or anything urinates, especially in public urinals or even  your own home toilet, DO YOU REALIZE how much urine splatters out all over ????? IF you never cleaned your own toilet ect you probably dont realize it. ( My house bathroom  has sign ALL MALES sit to urinate or GO OUTSIDE!)    I clean my own bathroom!   Just stop and realize the urine spatter  that goes on your shoes and pants legs.   Another thing to think about...... oh boy arent we having fun with this post...LOL ;D

Good point RdFx  :) and then some trapper smirk at the idea of starting every trapline day with clean body and clean fresh clothing, saying they are only going to get their clothing dirty anyway. Ace

Soap is cheap!  There really is little room for argument that general personal hygeniene is easily and cheaply had at this time.  On the other hand, I work one of my lines from a line cabin with no running water.  I do this for a day or three at a time.  The best I can do is the best I can do...this means only sponge baths.  I'll go back to a previous point, if you are about paying attention to details, this may be as important, or more so, than a shower and freshly pressed pants every morning.

RdFx, my mom taught me not to pee on myself.
Good point, though. Same with your shoes. You walk out of that bathroom, after walking in God knows what, and thanks to the necessity of tread we can keep a bit of it on our shoes for quite some time, too.
Ciggarette smoke is another one, also. Stop in a bar for a quick sandwich over lunchtime, then head out to run sets. Ever smell your clothes after a visit to a bar where smoking is allowed?
Hey all, great posts and a great subject. Lot of good material here to ponder.
