Life vests for boating dogs...
« on: March 30, 2003, 07:56:59 AM »
I hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question. My Dalmatian, Disney, goes with me in my fishing boat all the time. Disney has some age on her now, and arthritis that occasionally makes getting around a bit painful for her. She gets shots for it, and generally is in good health otherwise though, but I worry about her if she would happen to end up in the water. I know that life vests for dogs are available, but was wondering if anyone here, being dog friendly people, could point me toward something that would be not only safe, but comfortable for her. Dalmatians do not handle extreme heat or cold very well, and I would want something that didn't cause her to over heat while out fishing with me... Thanks. Dave

I use a camo vest,  that has some floatation, on my lab when duck hunting. It is mainly for protection from the cold but does help her float a little higher out of the water too.  Make sure you practice with it first as some vests will flip a dog over or hold their head down if the floatation is too far back.

Swimming or just walking out in deep water should be good for her arthritis too.
