7600 barrel swap

Hello,

I have a Remington 7600 in '06 carbine.  I have been considering swapping the barrel to a .338-06.  I see all kinds of bolt action barrels available, but can not find one for the 7600.  I also am not sure of the process for swapping it out.  I know I would have to hire a gunsmith.  Can anyone give me some thoughts or advice?  Thanks.

If you wish the same barrel length the 30-06 could be bored out and re-rifled to the 338-06. Rebarreling requires the smith remove the barrel extension and headspace the barrel after the barrel extension is installed on the new barrel.  Rebarreling would allow selection of the contour/length you wish and would likely cost about the same.. There are fewer places that can rebore a barrel but you can send you rifle thru the USPS to where ever it needs to go and receive it back without the intervention or services of an FFL. You may also note that Federal recently introduced the 338 Federal cartridge. This is sinply a 308 winchester case expanded to take a 338 diameter bullet.. You night consider rebarreling to the 338 Fed to gain the advantage of factory ammo/brass. Of course 338-06 is not difficul to form, at least in the most common wildcat form.. I had heard that the 338-06 was to be adopted by one of the rifle makers but have not seen anything for a certainty.
