« on: May 07, 2006, 04:21:28 PM »
I just pick-up a Howa 1500 in 6.5x55 from Wallymart.I had to special order it and it took 6weeks.My son seen it and next thing I knew he claimed it.He said it shoots great and the bolt action is so fine.I would like to get another Howa, but then again I would like to get a different brand,at a reasonable price.Whats out there in that 6.5x55? :-)I really
dont want a Remington...
I'm not in VietNam anymore,so get someone else to walk point.('69-'70)

You can watch for a Swedish Mod 96 or 38 that has been sporterized.  I picked up a Kimber sporterized Carl Gustav swede that has a timey trigger.   I also have a 6.5 x 55 barrel for my encore that I really like.

You can pick up a mauser fairly cheap, and either have a smith do the work or you and your son could do the project. Not really that hard Midway has aftermarket drop-in trigger relatively cheap. They also sell some boyds stock for 96 mausers. When you were finished it would not be just some gun purchased but a memory, to go with the hunt. Check out my humble attempt on custom guns "Sweet Swede" and I am no smith
but I am entirely satisfied, I was already offered 600 for the gun but turned it down simple because you can't buy the memory.

two dogs - you did a fabulous job on that Sweet Swede of yours and you are absolutely correct about 'the memory' of hunting with a rifle you custom worked yourself - it stays with ya forever.  JMHO.  Mikey.

I went to every sporting goods store within a 75mile radius.I could'nt find any 6.5x55 in any firearm near me with out special ordering it.I decided on a Ruger Mark II,stanless,.260caliber.And it will still take a week to get it. 8)

I don't think I'd class that as a second choice.  :-D
