Whats a #5?
« on: May 08, 2006, 03:46:44 AM »
What is a #5?  I ask that question as I wonder how many shooters have actually held the original.  Having 2 TLA Grovers improved #5 sixguns I can tell you that both differ in the heel to toe measurement about a quarter of an inch.  Now granted these are hand made sixguns but which one is more correctly dimensioned? And who is to say?

Further,  I recently commisioned Clements to build me a #5 style sixgun on my last Ruger Flattop.  The mainframe with the attached #5 style gripframe recently arrived so that we can fit the stocks.  It is absolutely gorgeous.  But it is again dimensionally different than the 2 TLA's.

Not looking to start a war or anything,  I just think that a #5 is what you make it.  Its about how it fits YOUR hand.  Even if you had access to the original,  unless your hand was exactly like Elmers,  it wouldnt be to you what it was to him.  Mine are for me and to me, priceless.

There's only one REAL #5.  The closest thing, and the only one built based on measurements from the original is Bowen's one of a kind masterpiece. Everything else is just an interpretation, although I think Grover got it right.  I have seen over 15 different TLA #5's, either in person or in pictures, and none had the same gripframe dimensions.

The filing and polishing from the raw castings was hit or miss from day to day. I doubt there will be many that are identical. The two Grover #5s that I owned were not the same dimentionaly. The origional is reported to be on the small side, for Elmer's small hands. I agree. The #5 is an idea. An expression of ones interpretation for the perfect sixgun.

A story was told to me about the TLA Improved #5 grip frame, as a result of a miscommunication, ending up shorter than was originally intended.  Hopefully Steve is capturing those tales in his upcoming book...

Yep.  I have been told that story straight from the source and will duly report it in the book.  :)
