Flintlock muskets as shotguns?
« on: May 08, 2006, 05:14:23 AM »
I don't recall what the exact details of the game commission laws are on this, but I was wondering if a smoothbore flintlock could be legally used as a shotgun during the regular seasons?  Particularly thinking turkey, small game, and waterfowl.  Actually, nix the waterfowl, as I don't think steel shot woudl treat it well.

The flintlock would likely be a modern replica of the Brown Bess musket (made with modern materials and manufacturing for superior safety) and the purpose of hunting with it would be for challenge and heritage.

It would work...but a Bess is fairly bulky...I'd look at a Jim Chambers in a 20 gauge, octagon to round....that would be sweet....

Spring Gobbler Season: 1) Manually operated and autoloading
shotguns limited to a 3-shell capacity in the chamber and
magazine combined; 2) Muzzleloading shotguns of all types
and gauges; 3) Long, recurve or compound bows with cutting-
edge broadheads. Crossbows are not legal, except for
authorized crossbow permit holders.

That's a really good question. It says ML Shotgun not smoothbore.

My guess is that a smooth bored longarm of 0.75" bore firing shot would count as a shotgun if a centerfire 12ga with rifled barrel firing a sabot slug is still a shotgun.  But I've been wrong before.
