Help!!!
« on: May 08, 2006, 05:54:55 AM »
I  believe this is the wrong question to ask on this board. My problem is I have been trying to adjust a rifle scope on a Rossi-06 with reloaded plated 110 gr. bullets. The first three shots are in the black at 50 yds. I make an adjustment and WHAMO, next 2 shots don't even hit the paper. Is it that the lands are filling up with bullet residue or the rifle is a POS? :(

Give us a little more to run on.
What kind of scope do you have on it?
"Make an adjustment"... -What kind left to right, up or down, remounting it etc..

Are your mounts and rings secure? -if these move just a little it will throw everything off. A little Super Glue on the screws will hold them in and secure.

How tight does your gun lock up? Is there any side to side or play in your barrel after it is locked up with the receiver? -In my opinion this is the hidden aspect that many people over look in a single shot, break open action rifle. If there is any slop in the barrel to receiver lock-up it will effect accuracy

Is the muzzle intact? -Meaning is there any small burs or scratches around the muzzle? You can take a Q-Tip and run it around to see if any of the cotton snags on a hidden bur.

What kind of rest are you using?

"In the black at 50..." How tight were they?

The there is the questions of your hand loads. But check over these first.

If this is the same rifle, I'd be looking at the scope.

Thanks guys for the knowledgable info. I think I am going to try a different scope and definitly change the reload recipe with a larger bullet before I give up on the gun.

While certainly my opinion of those rifles is that they are a POS, that's a personal opinion and has no bearing on the question.  :-D

I think you're premature in doing anything until we've discussed this a bit more. If you got three shots in a good tight pattern then the load isn't all that bad and the rifle has shown it can shoot OK.

How fast are you moving those bullets? While it "might" be the barrel leaded up I doubt it in three shots.

So what kinda scope do you have? How many clicks did you move it? Let's talk this thru a bit before you start making major changes.

My 223 Rossi Bull barrel shoots under an inch , close to an 1/2" sometimes. So I would think ur Rossi would do better, listen to the guys above this post.

From my experience with a .308 Rossi, you really gotta let them cool down. .30 - `06 would be even more so. fire 3 rounds, and then let it cool to cold.  Read the instructions for adjusting your scope ( if you have them. )   At 50 yards one click could be and eighth of an inch, could be half, depends on the scope.  But first and foremost, let it cool. If I try to keep firing after 3 shots, it`s all over the shop like a mad womans poop.
Also,  my .308 kicks like hell, whats an `06 like?? It`d be stout, eh..

Yup, let it cool

Most any of the .30 cal rifles are going to heat up fast with any kind of a normal load in them. Shoot 3 rounds and then let it cool down and you'll find it will do it's best. And I don't mind the recoil on my 06, but my buddy hates it, so I think the kick depends on who it's kicking.

Also too, inline with what these guys just said, the Rossi barrels are on the thinner/lighter side. Meaning they are prone to heat up even quicker.
I suggest after you got the scope issues figured out, then shoot 1 round, break open the action sit it down, relax,  and let it cool for 2-3 mins. Then put it back on paper, and make sure your bags fit exactly like they did the first shot.

Thanks guys on that "let it cool down" tip. Its something I wasn't aware of. I will try it after 3 shots. Like I said after 3, the shots are going in all directions. At least the first three were in the black. Sounds like the gun and not the scope.  :D
