Manual tranny question
« on: May 08, 2006, 08:02:00 AM »
Got a question for the manual tranny folks:
I bought a 97 f-250 with a 460 gasser and a manual tranny. It has 125000 miles, and has been well cared for. No oil leaks; everything works; bought it as a platform for a slide-in camper hauler. Big 11 1/2 ft. Lance camper, and I also pull a quad in a trailer. Guy I got it from says to not use the overdrive gear with a load as it will "burn up".  He said to run it in 4th gear instead.  I am wanting to know if doing 70 mph on a flat interstate hyway, 2200 rpm without taxing the rig will melt the tranny. Seems to me that there's plenty of giddy-up when I step on it, so I don't think there's any lugging going on.  Am I nuts?  If I can improve the mileage by 1mpg using the overdrive on the flats I would, if I'm not hammerin' the gearbox.
Thanks again! :D  xraze.

there is absolutley nothing in a manual tranny that can BURN up or melt. Biggest trouble with lugging under a load in a high gear is possible wear on the clutch.

The only thing running it out of overdrive is going to do for you is keep the tranny from down shifting all the time. If its flat road it won't hurt a thing. If its hilly you would be better off turning it off.   KN

Thanks Lloyd:
Yes I was referring to a manual transmission. I didn't think there was anything in the gearbox that would (slip) i.e. create excessive heat. I just wasn't sure, and knew for sure someone here would have a clue  :-)  I appreciate your response and will shift down for the hills; let her run on the flats!  8) Thanks again!   xraze
