« on: May 08, 2006, 04:56:48 PM »
I have a large ground hog invading my barm and digging deep holes inside. He's a fast bugger.  I want to set a bucket trap for him with a conibear 220. However I need to know what the best bait to use for him? Can anyone advise?

Ground hogs can be caught right away with various baits....  apples , lettuce , cabbage, carrots.  Also  clover , alfalfa ect.   Sometimes though they will refuse or just arent interested in anything green.... i had a  hog like that once.... care to guess what i used for bait that caught him????? ' A partially eaten McDonalds Big Mac!!   I had tried everything and  a fellow with me  said here put this (the Big Mac) in the box trap as i dont want the rest of it.... i thought  Yea Right... but threw it in  there and  next day i had the persnickety xxlge male hog.   He had eaten ALL of the Big Mac and only left the wrapper.... LOL..... So goes to show, the norm isnt always the norm.... but give some of the greens  a try i mentioned and good luck.

If your groundhog doesn't go fo the free food, set the 220 over a fresh den entrance. That should get him.

Try peanut butter.  All kinds of critters love it.

I don't see why a ground hog wouldn;t like peanut butter. Afterall, peanuts are an earthly delight!
Thanks for the tips

Take a 5 gallon bucket that you would use for a bucket cubby and cut the bottom out of it, place some hardware cloth over the end and postion the bucket with a set 220 in front of the den. The open end will allow the grond hog to think he can walk through the bucket, but the hardware cloth will also keep out any unwanted pets from trying to enter the den. I've used them a lot for ADC work in towns where it seems everyone had a cat or dog they let run loose. Later, Worm.
