encore mount question
« on: May 10, 2006, 06:00:30 PM »
I have a leupold 2.5x8x36 that I am going to mount on my encore 209x50 barrel.  I would like to leave my sights in place and be able to remove my barrel when need be.  I thought about the leupold QR mount and medium rings.  Would these clear the sights and leave enough clearance for the hammer? Any opinions about these mounts?

I tried Leupold quick release mounts on an Encore 375 H&H Magnum and they shot loose.  I would personally not have confidence that they would stay in place under a muzzel loader's recoil.

There are Encore bases/rings called Quick Sites which I got from Natchez that allow one to mount a scope and still use the iron sites.  I have them on an Encore 270 Win. and a 30/06 barrel and like them.  I think it's nice to have the iron site option in case there is a scope malfunction or for close targets.  Not too long ago, the iron site option on my 30/06 came in handy when a ground hog was heading for his hole under my porch at high speed.  I blasted him on the run from about 20 feet away; try that with a scope.

I don't like the Leupold QR mounts on my Encores. They have a tendency to loose up. I much prefer the Warne mounts. As far as using a scope with see through rings, that is another option I don't choose to use, I prefer to use permanent mounts that get the scope as close to the barrel as possible. My thought is, either use a scope or use iron sights. On my 3 Encore muzzleloader's, I have Warne mounts and medium rings and still have the iron sights left on the gun. I can remove the scope and use my iron sights even with the mount in place.  :D

You may not have enough adjustment in that scope to get on the paper @100 yards. Check archived posts about this. Use Burris signature rings with shimmed inserts for countermeasure. Search archives...

Thanks for all the replies.  After more reading I still have a few more questions.  Do the Warne qd rings mount to the same base as the non-QD rings. Do the mounts and rings come in silver, seems everywhere matte is the color?  Is mounting this scope going to be a big deal to get sighted in?

I've had good luck with Burris zee rings that have the detachable levers.  I switch a Leupold 3 x 9 tactical between 6.5 and 7mm encore barrels.
I record the settings of the scope before moving it to the other barrel.  When I put the scope back, I just turn it to the #s and it is usally within a click of being zeroed.

Thanks James,  I glad to here it can be done.
I have kind of decided to go with the warne set up since the bases would be cheaper to put on the other barrels. also the bases would give me more leeway in mounting.  Now I have to check out that system  lol.  At least I still have some time before season for a change.  Any other suggestions out there?
