Good riddance to brass
« on: May 10, 2006, 08:24:55 PM »
Hi.
Each time I look at all that brass on my T.C. I feel quite ill.
However, I have just discovered Birchwood Casey Brass Black... a big thumbs up! It gives the yellow stuff a beautiful dark mottled appearance, a bit like case hardened iron. It may wear a bit thin in time but should be easy to touch up.
Cheers ,
gazz.

It's always interesting the different perspectives we have on things.
I'm just the opposite...have a number of TC Hawkens that I shoot/hunt year round and keep them all in showroom ready condition...if I can't see my teeth in the brass I feel like I'm slacking off or something...and it certainly doesn't bother deer at all  :-)

Brass is why I switched over to a Renegade. All blued hardware. Nice, plain and simple! :D

I gave up hunting a few years ago because the lyme disease is almost at an epidemic level here in southern New England. I guess if I were hunting with my Hawken I'd let the brass tarnish a bit to cut down on the flash. But being that I only punch paper now I keep the brass bright and clean...Jim

I sold my last rifle with brass of any kind on it probably 20 years ago.  Never did like the stuff on a rifle.  Matter of fact I believe it was a TC Hawken.  Never cared much for them either, not that they aren't a good rifle as they are.  I thought the Seneca much nicer of the two.

I don't believe the shiny brass bothers the deer much, if any.  I know the silver inlays and patch box on my Lancaster doesn't seem to bother them.  I could see the possibility of flash alerting game when I lived in Wyoming but not here in the heavily wooded Ozarks.

Doesn't bother them at all...movement is what gets their attention.
I even added solid brass ramrods for extra strength, weight, and more pretty brass...

it is interesting,,,I don't care fer shiney brass either. I put a "patina" look on all new brass I own by rubbing a first pass swab patch from cleaning the bore on the shiney stuff,. I wait 24-48 hours then oil and care for it like all my guns. Too clean it off(!),(?), all it takes is 4-ought steel wool and sum rubbin..(polish if ya want too)
Deer don't care if it's shiney or dull,..ya know?,,Deer don't even care if it's rust brown, raw, or blued.
Brass is so easy too polish. : Brass; copper and zinc;: a soft metal composite,, :D

I like the brass on my old hawkens always spit shine bright, but I think the above hawken look a little more traditional drop into a pa hunter stock.I miss the double set triggers on the hawkens

I like them with different finishes, blued, browned, whatever, including brass... but I like to weather the shiny stuff with brass black to give it an old, well kept look as opposed to new from the factory.
