Update: New York Trapping Bill Advances

ALBANY, NY—A bill that would strip the state of its authority to regulate trapping is advancing through the New York state Legislature.

New York Democratic Assemblyman Alexander Grannis’ Assembly Bill 1835 would allow county governments to regulate trapping. Those opposed to the bill say it places politics over public health concerns and the sound scientific management of the state’s wildlife resources.

Late last month, the New York Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee voted in favor of AB 1835 by a vote of 17-11. The bill had been stalled by sportsmen’s grassroots action earlier in the month, but in a last minute decision, Democratic Committee Chairman Thomas DiNapoli scheduled a vote on the bill.

New York sportsmen are being asked to contact their legislators and encourage them to oppose AB 1835. To contact your legislators, call (518) 455-4218 or use the “Legislative Action Center” at www.ussportsmen.org
