IMR-4320 For 45/70 Gov't

I saw this powder listed on (stevespages) for the 45/70 gov't has anyone tried these loads.I shoot a H&R Ultra Hunter 270 and im fixing to get a 45/70 gov't barrel fitted and looking for some safe reloads to shoot in it to whitetail deer hunt with.

Even IMR 4320 is to slow for optimal loads, particularly with barrels 26" or shorter.

For a 300 grain bullet I use the following load which would be equally suited to your H&R:
Marlin 1895 45-70 22" barrel
300 grain Sierra (2.525" COAL), Hornady (2.55" COAL) or Speer (2.53" COAL)
Winchester brass, 2.1" trim, if necessary
CCI 200 primer
55 grains H4198
2180 fps with the Hornady

I have great luck with 45/70 loads in Encore's, long and Katy barrels, and 6 different NEF's in 22-inch 45/70 barrels with RE7.  CCI200 primers, for 350 grain Hornady JFN, 47 grains, and the most accurate  and faster is 300 grain HP Hornady with 49 grains.  These loads shoot about 1-inch groups at 100 yards.  They are several grains below maximum and will shoot through a whitetail at 100 yards.   :D

rms270hr..........greetings........yes to your question.  Reloader 7 for 45/70.  There are lots of powders to use, but I went through about 6 or 7 before I found a load that would shoot in my Encore Katy barrel.  When Mississippi changed the law for black powder last year, NEF's started coming out of the woodworks.  I load for 6 different guys besides myself.  I tried the same load in the NEF's and it worked great.  Good with the 350 Hornady JFN but great with the 300 Hornady hollow point, 47 and 49 gr. respectively.  I have not tried another bullet, because there would be none any more accurate or cheaper.  Both will kill up to Elk size.  Hope this helps........Dippingvat.........Hattiesburg, Mississippi  :D    :-D

   Sounds good thats good enough for anything we got in mississippi.Did you have any problems with these loads pressure wise.

No pressure signs.......spent primers look good, no brass splitting, even in the Encore Katy barrel.  Got beginning info from "Steve's Page"' and his tests show you can go to Reloader 7 with 63 grains using the 300 grain bullet.  I tried hotter loads than 59 grains, but kicks too much for me.  The 300 grain with 59 grains should be traveling about 2100 fps.  Have a nice day.     :D

    Yeah i was just worried about the pressure on the H&R frame don't want to stretch it out.I don't know how much it can stand. I wrote H&R a e-mail to see what the safe pressures are but haven't heard back from them. :D

I use just a tad bit more than starting load weights .

    Yeah i saw that in the alliant reloading manual i have the lee shooters program on my computer it has all the curent powder manuals in it.I have never used the alliant powders before but thats a small charge 10.0 starting grains and 15.0 max must be some real powerfull powder.I noticed the 15.0 max charge has a 1424 fps is that enough to bring a deer down i was thinking it had to be like more up in the 2000 fps range.
