Robert is one of the only ones I remember that has posted about reloading for the little russian in a Handi. Did very well with handloads and pretty good on factory hunting rounds. He even used some heavy loads and cast stuff. Which I would love a range report on different grain bullets and how the .308 diameter bullets shoot as compared to .311 or .312. If they(.308) shoot well, then the possibilites open up a lot for this little caliber.

thanks. i learned just what i needed to know. i didn't realize the problem with the primers till i read it tonite. without cheap surplus ammo i see no reason to choose the 7.62 over the 30-30. too bad they wouldn't use those barrels for .303 brit. thanks again.

Donno if you noticed em or not, but there are a few threads on rechambering the 7.62x39 to 7.62x54R as I recollect, but I don't remember if anyone actually did it....could be the same problem then, tho as far as surplus ammo, donno. My thinking has always been the same as your thinking on the .30-30 vs 7.62x39, no advantage there if milsurp won't work.

Still, from a reloaders stand point, if it performs well with .308 bullets-which from all reports it does- there is a lot of light hearted fun to be had with it. By far not the flatest or fastest caliber out there, with the excellent twist offered, it can make for a lot of fun. From 90gr bullets-220+gr there's a lot to play with. And especially the noise factor. While I always wear protection, it's nice to plink with light loads from time to time. Heck it's why we love the 22LR so much! Its a nice medium between pistols cartridges -357, and full length rifle cartridges for a 30cal option.
I am begining to see the applications more and more where I live for such a little carbine.

Ummm, and the .30-30 won't shoot all those .308" bullets?

Yup, they sure will :) Not to sound to opinionated, but if I were to consider going with a 30-30, in my mind and needs, I would just assume go with a 308 and get all the extra performance. I like the old 30-30, and it's always a proven game getter. Always has been. I'm just saying that I believe the 7.62 fits a nitch for shooters. Not to mention a good place to start if someone has a 303 or 7.62x54R project.

Many modern commercial arms have been chambered in the 7.62x39 using .308" barrels - others have used larger bores.  Which diameter does the Handi use?

.310" with a twist rate of 1:9.45" per H&R.

Well, spreading my sour grapes on my .432 diameter 44 mag barrel----are the barrels REALLY .310 or are they ".310 +or-.003 inches?"

Well, if they shoot .308" bullets well, they must be close to H&R/NEF's standard tolerance of +/- .002", a tight .310 or a loose .308"!!!!

Good point, I leaped before I looked.  I was one of the ones clamoring for a 7.62x39, but again, if it won't shoot surplus then why would you want one?

I am leaning toward replacing my .308 as an accessory or as a complete Ultra.  I regret selling that one last year.  That will be my last NEF though.  There is the point of diminishing returns with everything.  oversized bore on the 44 and the chamber that is too long on the 223 have just frustrated me.
