Hunter Class question.....
« on: May 12, 2006, 09:04:20 AM »
There are no Smallbore Hunter Silhouette Matches in my area.  My question is, can I shoot at a Standard Smallbore Silhouette Match and get classified for Smallbore Hunter Rifle?  The local Match director was unsure about my question.

shooting standard rifle in hunter class

MinMan,  Can't do this.  You can shoot hunter in standard class bur not vise-versa.  It would be unfair to shoot a 10 lb 2 ox gun with a light trigger in hunter class and you would be disqualified in a match.   Would be best to just shoot your old squirrel rifle to get a classification.  Don

I'm not sure I understand the question or maybe you don't understand the classifications. First, what kind of rifle do you have? That makes a big difference as the previous post states.
I don't know what you mean by a Smallbore Standard Match. Most matches I go to you can shoot either gun along side each other and get classified in whichever gun you are shooting and get your score logged into your NRA book under that class.
True you can't get a Hunter class score by shooting a Standard class gun.
I'm also questioning what experience the macth director has if he can't advise you. Please explain further.

correct me if i'm wrong but it sounds like your match director has his match defined as a standard rifle match.  you want to shoot a hunter rifle in his standard rifle match, which isn't a problem, but you also want to get a hunter rifle classification while shooting in the standard rifle match?  does that sound even close?  certainly only a technicality but you may not be able to do that...  i'm positive Mr. Kuney will know the answer!?!  if we can get the man with the magical brain to share his wisdom with us?

'The magical brain'???
If I'm so smart, how come I can't figure out how to shoot better?

Anything that you shoot in a match that's designated 'Smallbore Silhouette Rifle' (Standard Rifle) goes into standard rifle scores and classification. It doesn't matter what rifle you use as long as it's legal for Standard.

In order to get a Hunting Rifle score for classification, you have to shoot in a Smallbore Hunting Silhouette Rifle match with a legal Hunter Rifle.

However, AFAIK there's nothing preventing a club from holding both matches simultaneously. We do it all the time here. You sign up BEFORE the match for either Hunter or Standard. In fact, many here shoot both rifles, alternating from relay to relay. (Your rifle still has to meet the requirements for the class that you're shooting.)

I've never heard of a match approval that was only valid for one venue. I guess that it could be done if the match director sent a match program to NRA that was specifically for a single type match...but I can't imagine why anyone would do that.

MM: Ask the match director if he requested approval for some reason only for standard rifle. Unless that's the case, ask him to run a Smallbore Hunting Silhouette  Rifle match concurrent with his Smallbore Silhouette Rifle match and allow those who have legal hunter rifles to shoot them as hunters if they want to enter that way. (He shouldn't, naturally, allow people to wait until AFTER the match to decide whether they'd shot Standard or Hunter.) ;-)

I can't see any reason why he'd refuse -- there's almost no more work involved on his part.
