Since the poster has not specified the firearm with which he will hunt, no one can safely recommend a load for him above Trapdoor levels.  Loads safe in a Marlin 1895 might stretch a T/C Contender apart.

A safe and highly accurate 300-grain load in my Contender is 21.0 grains of BlueDot.  51 grains of IMR4198 would not be a safe load in this or some other rifles; if you read the post above closely you will note the rifle used is among the strongest ever available for the cartridge.  I've used that load in my M98 rifle, but I would never consider it for my Contender or my old H&R Trapper.

Here's some data for other 300gr bullets that are within the Ultra's capabilities, although they may not be within yours as far as recoil!!

http://www.realguns.com/loads/4570.htm

The Hornady manual for the 300gr hornady HP shows RL-7 starting at 44.7gr to a max of 52.3gr in the levergun level. They recommend Win brass, Fed 210 primers.

If you want to stay in the trapdoor level, their start load for RL-7 is 31.6gr.

Just remember, what works in another rifle, even an identical model, doesn't necessarily mean it will shoot good in yours. I prefer to choose a powder and bullet combo that shows promise from others that have worked with em, like you have with the RL-7, and work up my own load. A prime example is Paul5388's hornet load, it shoots good in several other member's Handis, but mine hates it.

In my .45-70 Ultra, I shoot 300gr nosler partitions at just a tad over 2400fps, but I started my load work well below that level and worked up, it shoots into less than an inch at 100yds.

If you choose to shoot levergun loads, I'd do some recoil prevention up front for the bench work, weight in the stock bolt hole, a better recoil pad and shoulder shield, and try to shoot as upright as possible which means either a high bench or high rest.

Hope this helps,

Tim
