Encores and conicals
« on: May 13, 2006, 08:50:05 AM »
Just wondering, has anyone had any success shooting conicals out their Encore as far as accuracy goes.  Thinking of trying some custom bullets from the Bullshop.

Encores and conicals

I don't have an Encore, but the guys I know who do have had better luck with conicals (as far as best accuracy) by removing the QLA. As in having the end of their barrels shortened to the rifling. There is really only one way to find out if your rifle likes them or not. You will want to slug your bore to find the exact diameter to order for the T/C though, since there is variations in their bore diameters. My T/C is a .54, but I have other 1-28 .50 calibers (Knight &NEF) that shoot conicals very well. My Whites in both .451 (1-20) and .504 (1-24) have the optimum twist rate for the long heavy conicals but the 1-28's will do well with 430-460 grainers.

You will want to order the exact diameter of your land to land measurement for slip fit loading with slight engraving and best accuracy IMO. Dan, at Bullshop will size them to any size you want, but be sure to order pure lead.

Thanks Busta.  Would you use a gas check also?

Sure would! I use a .060" thick .518" diameter fiber gasket wad I get from Cabelas. These wads really tighten up my groups. Start out around 70 grains of powder by volume and work up. With 777, your best accuracy should be in the 70-80 grain area with a 430-460 grain pure lead conical. If you use black powder or pyrodex you will probably get best accuract in the 80-90 grain area.

Dan doesn't have too much of a selection between 400 and 460. I haven't shot his 400 Gn LGP yet, but the 460 Gn MT NEx will shoot out of most rifles well.

I'll send you a PM with more info, but remember to order the correct diameter for your rifle or you will have accuracy troubles.
