Favorite 45/70 load

What is your favorite bullet and load for hunting and target shooting with a 45/70? I've wanted one for 20 years and finally got one last weekend. Looks to ba a very versatile cartridge.

My favorite load is 70 gr. by volume of Goex black powder and a 535 gr. postell cast bullet. I shoot them in my Shiloh Sharps.

But I did have a bunch of different loads I shot in my Encore,45-70, Ruger #1 and Marlin 45-70's. I just had to work up loads for each.  :D

Once again we have a question which perhaps shouldn't be answered without knowing the firearm in which the load will be shot.  If you own a Trapdoor and we give you Ruger-level loads, is that helpful?  There are at least three different levels of pressure for .45-70 loads, and to post loads without clearly stating the firearms they are safe in which to use is borderline irresponsible - IMO anyway.

Not everyone who reads these pages knows all about .45-70 loading levels, and if they copy the load without the vital safety knowledge, we would share responsibility in the potential accident.  Shouldn't we at least make an effort to help keep the uninitiated out of trouble?   8)

I prefer the 500 grain 457125 but wouldn't argue much with the posted load

The best thing is to get a reloading manual and pick a load, then work tell you find the one that gives you the best accuracy. There are thousands of loads out there for the 45-70. The fun of learning a good combination for your gun is the amount of shooting you get to do to get there.  :D

You asked for our favorite load, now your getting picky.  :-D  :D

In a 1895G guide gun: 50 grs. of H-322, 440 grain WFN gc.  Will break 1800fps. with perfect functioning over many rounds and makes one ragged hole at 50 yds.

My Marlin seems to like 54.0 grains of 2015BR pushing a 300 gr. Hornady HP. Good luck and hope this helps. :D

Thanks to all who submitted info to help me. After studying the posts and my loading manuals, I noticed that some of them and some of the links provided list loads that are quite a bit over the max loads listed in the manuals. I've been reloading for 30 years and know about working up loads, but I'd be hesitant to go that far over the recommended maximums. I saw a Ruger No. 1 Tropical at my favorite gun shop today in 45/70. Maybe I should just get it so I can work with a bit more pressure. The heavier loads with heavier bullets sound like fun to me.

Thanks again to everyone for all of the info.

53.0- IMR 3031 WITH A 300 JSP ( I'VE USED SIERRA AND REMINGTON BULK)  I'VE ALSO USED THIS CHARGE WITH A SPEER 400 JSP, LISTED
IN MY BOOKS AS MAX. IN A MARLIN. BOTH ARE VERY ACCURATE, BUT THE 400GR. GIVES A GOOD PUSH.  I ALSO USE A L.B.T. 400GR.
CAST BULLET MADE BY VERAL SMITH, AN EXCELLENT BULLET.
IT WORKS WELL WITH 3031 AND AA5744 AT BLACK POWDER VELOCITY.
IN MY C.SHARPS IT'S ALL BLACK POWDER.

Daddywpb,

The Hodgdon Sierra manuals list the same loads for Ruger and Marlin 1895.

The loads they list for the 300 grain bullet are:
54 to 60 grains of H322
48 to 52 grains of H4198
38 to 40 grains of H4227
51 to 56 grains of IMR3031
45 to 50 grains of Hercules RE 7
35.5 to 41 grains of 2400

There are no loads for 300 grain bullets in my Speer manual and the following loads were listed in my Accurate Arms manual without noting what gun they were for - I would see if they could be double checked against other manuals before loading them at or near maximum levels:

53 to 59 grains of AA2015
63 to 70 grains of AA4350
63 to 70 grains of AA3100
61 to 65 grains of AA2700

AS always, use with caution - start low and work your way up but under no circumstances do I recommend that you exceed maximum listed loads.
PaulS

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.
