Shot Placement
« on: May 16, 2006, 04:06:18 AM »
I have done quite abit of deer hunting but I have no experience with bear hunting.  I am going on my first black bear hunt this fall and I need some help sorting out fact from ficton.

On shot placement, I have read two schools of thought.  On a broadside shot, one says to aim for behind the forward leg to hit the heart/lung area.  The second one says to aim higher and slightly forward to take out both shoulders.

What are you experiences?  Thanks for your help.  2Guns

Bears are easy to kill.  Just do a lung shot and you will be fine.  A shoulder shot may be better only if you are afraid of loosing the animal in heavy brush or he is really close to you on the ground.  Most bow shots kill the bear within 20 seconds and 30 yards from the stand.

The large AK bear I've shot were all taken with lung shots, but the bullet was aimed to hit the offside leg after penetrating the lungs.  This worked well on one brownie on a Baranof beach - broke the offside leg and he didn't get too far into the brush.

I like the lung and shoulder shots. I like to angle the shot to take out the lungs and exit shoulder.  :D  I also like big holes.

I'm in full agreement with both, I love those quartering shots.  If it was a straight shot though, I'd go for lungs.
