1945 60MM Black powder beer can mortar?

Does this type of motor fit here or is this only for old mortars?

Presumably you are talking about a mortar of the Stokes design (long tube supported by a bipod arrangement.  See this post for current board policy.  There have been posts in the past saying Stokes mortars are OK if you don't use self-contained ammo but no one has provided a letter from the ATF so stating.

First and foremost, WELCOME, and thanks for asking.  

In a word, no.  As George has explaned, as we read the law, 1898 design and before are legal.  However we would be greatly interested in seeing a letter of approval from BATFE.  I have emailed a number of folks that have them or sell them and not heard back from any with anything other than their perspectives.  Not a safe way to go through life - playing with toys that could get you 10 years and/or 10 grand if you have the wrong features.

Do post pictures and tell us of your other pre 1899 blackpowder experiences!

Farmer John,

Welcome to the board. Sorry to start you off with bad news, but the Mortars we shoot are a lot more fun!

Here is the statement on the purpose of the board.  After reading it you will see that your mortar--1945 60MM Black powder beer can mortar doesn't meet the purpose of the board.  That being said take a look around the board and see the cannons and mortars we are shooting and you will see we are having a lot more fun without having to look over our shoulder all the time.

The Purpose of this board. This board is for the making and shooting of blackpowder mortars and cannons that meet ATF's description of an antique or replica of an antique.  You will find Links to ATF's various descriptions in our FAQ's and references posted at the top of the board.
We as moderators will enforce this rule as we understand ATF's definition.  We are not Lawyers.  We are going to go with what we know and understand. This is for your protection as well as ours.  We do not want this forum to become the hunting grounds for rookie ATF Agents trying to make their reputation.  The Veterans arenÂ’t going to bother us they are to busy looking for real crooks.

If you wish to provide us with a letter from ATF defining whatever other device you wish to discuss as an antique we will allow the discussion. Provide the letter first.

That being said this is what we accept on this forum.

1.  Any firearm not designed or redesigned for using rim fire or conventional center fire ignition with fixed ammunition

and

2. Manufactured in or before 1898...or replica thereof, whether actually manufactured before or after the year 1898)

or

3. Any firearm using fixed ammunition manufactured in or before 1898, for which ammunition is no longer manufactured in the United States and is not readily available in the ordinary channels of commercial trade.
