Factory ammo for .243?
« on: May 20, 2006, 08:23:10 AM »
I have shot alot of deer but none with a .243. I have used 12ga, .50cal. mz, .300 win mag. .308, and .270 wsm. I just got a brl for my Encore in .243 and want to use it this year. I dont reload and would like to order some ammo from Cabelas or someplace. What are some good factory rounds to try in my gun? I will be shooting deer out to about 200 yards.

Federal Fusion 95 grain is hands down the best .243 round for whitetail on the market today. I took 8 animals last year with my .243 using the Federal Fusion 95 and they all expired on the spot. 5 Whitetails and 3 coyotes fell to the Fusion 95 grain. They are also very inexpensive. I believe you will be very satisfied with them.

I haven't tried the Federal Fusion......and it sounds like good ammo.......I've been using 100 grain winchester silver tips as the shoot right at 1" out of my wifes Ruger Ultra light.

Inside of 200 yards, the Hornady Custom 100gr, Federal Premium 100gr in Nosler Partition or Sierra GameKing BTSP as well as the Remington 100 gr CoreLokt  all work well...all but the GameKing will usually exit on broadside lung shots...The GameKing puts deer down faster on lung shots but doesn't exit as often as the others...Past 200 yards the best factory loading is the Federal Premium 85gr BTHP....It actually gives more exits on lung shots than the GameKing, or the Winchester PowerPoints.

Cant really go wrong with a 100 Gr Rem Corelokt....

Beware those who preach from the book of all-holy-super-duper-special-magic-premium bullets..... They'd have you convinced that Deer now wear body armor... that there is now a need for special bullets....  :-D  What about the guys who use patched round balls in a .50 cal front stuffer....

It does not take a special bullet to kill a deer.

I'd rather spend time being a better shot and better hunter than money on the newest new-fangled special do-dad....

Just my $0.02 as usual...

We have used the Fed. Prem. 100gr Sierra Gameking with very good results but has been noted you don't need the latest super-killer bullet for deer.

Not a big fan of the .243, but for me it was the only show in town for years. Shot a lot of deer with my 788... It sure seemed that 100gr Corelok
dropped the deer much faster than lighter more expensive loads.

I SHOT 1 BUCK EACH OF THE LAST TWO YEARS WITH THE 100grn CORE-LOCT EXPRESS(CHEAP BULLETS) WITH MY DAUGHTERS 243 REMINGTON.ONE DROPPED DEAD ON THE SPOT AND LAST ONE WENT ABOUT 25yds.
I figure I'll stick with the cheap ammo till sumthin happens to change my mind.

I load 100gr Rem Core-Lokts and if I had to use factory ammo it woud be Remington 100gr Core-Lokt in the green and yellow box. It shoots 1 MOA or better in my M77 MKII stainless.

Ditto, the 100gr Rem Core Lokt's.  My wife has dropped whitetail, hogs and sheep with that round.    She has never lost an animal she hit..   ;)

Beenplaying around with a new Browning a-bolt and the factory stuff shoots very good in my rifle especially with the 100 grn Ramington corelock.About 3/4"   ve;. 2956  shot a very big buck last year with the .86 grn sierra, right through the heart, he ran aways and dropped. I would not have found him except it was in the open and I could watch the deer. I talked with a speer guy yesterday and he recommended their 90 grn bullet.

factory 100 grn rems always worked for me, killed prob more than 20 deer with them in a model 7.ive never seen a correct hit that resulted in anything less than awesum penetration and expansion. any deer shot in heart lung area was just a few steps away from a clean low meat loss death. shoulder punched deer died almost instantly but with some meat loss due to the huge amount of hydraulic shock to the meat.
