Bullet weight and barrel twist for 6.5x55???
« on: May 21, 2006, 06:19:27 PM »
Getting a CZ 550 FS in 6.5x55...  It has a 1:8.6 twist rate and I was wondering what SHOULD be the most accurate bullet weight for this twist rate???

Thanks,

Jim

The twist rate is no doubt fast enough to handle the 160 grain bullets.
My nephew and his wife both have CZ 550 Americans in this caliber.
Both rifles shoot 140 grain bullets under an inch @ 100 yards also.
Same story with the 160 grainers.

My Encore barrel with a 1:8 twist shoots 120 or 140 gr. reloads equally well at 1".  My 160 gr. reloads with RL-22 are about 1.5".  I think my Swedes with  7.8  barrels do about the same but its hard for me to tell as they have open sights.

I have a swedish Carl Gustav which was commercially sporterised and has a 22" barrel a Swedish military barrel so has the 1in 8.6 twist and I find it shoots any bullet well. A week ago last Sunday at the range I tried some Norma factory 77 grain loads and it shot them into under 1" I also tried some 120 grn Speers, 129 grain Hornadys and 160 Grain hornadys. The only loads it didn't like was a coupls I had loaded with Vectan TU5000 powder and a load with 100 grain Ballistic Tips. The 160 grain load using Reloader 19 had seven shots touching  :P

I have an old Savage .243 that I had rebored to 6.5 some time before the .260 Remington was announced. It has an 8.5" twist and stabilizes the 160 Hornady quite well. I've not tried the 160 Sierra which is a bit longer. This rifle loves the 129 Hornady which suits me just fine. I've not used any of the 140s in this rifle.  :D
