Who has used or uses a .311/.312 cal rifle?

The other .30 cal for all intents and purposes.
Let us know how effective you find your beastie and which loads you use.
Y'know, for a while I've been mystified as to why both Barnes and Nosler fail to produce any bullets in .311 or .312 call when both the Brit and the Russian as well as 7.65 Argentine use this cal and are reasonably popular & very effective big game cartridges quite capable of knocking over elk and moose in the right circumstances.
While there are a number of Sth African and Canadian custom makers I believe Woodleigh are the only major firm producing controlled expansion pills in .303 cal.
Any clues on why Barnes & Nosler haven't added this cal?

a sporterized 303 was my first deer rifle.killed a few deer with it.loaned it to a coworker, got it back a year later.rusty, missing the foreend cap and the williams sights,he had let his kids play with it! a few years later while recovering from knee surgery i stripped the stockdown ,carved a rounded fore end onto it,  refinished it and installed a williams  sight off of a savage 110.i have been shooting a canadian 150 gr psp,i've used 180 gr also. have not seen 220 gr in a while. it is a good gun.

Given that we can only vote for one, I chose the .303.  Its one of my favorite military and sporting rounds.  But, I have to note an honorable mention for the 7.62X54.

Thanks.

Sadly I couldn't do a "vote in multiple categories" poll.
If you have another .311 cal rifle in addition to your .303 please vote for it instead as I'm interested in seeing exactly who's using the more unusual cartridges like the Jap and Argentine.

The first high powered rifle I owned was a Model 91 Argentine Mauser.
Got it at Montgomery Wards, for a whopping $15.00 !
Back in the 1960's. What a deal....

I use all but the 7.7 Jap (I do have a 6.5 Jap).

Argie is set up in scout configuration and was difficult to get to group.  Finally settled on 123 gr bullets after playing for years with heavier jacketed and cast bullets.  Quick handling and fun to shoot.

I have a .303 SMLE MKIII in military configuration. Boy, you Tommys and ANZACs and Canadians had short arms. Actually, three of my grandparents immigrated to New England (US) from the Maritimes of Canada in the 1920s. I often go back to see my parent's cousins.

Have been shooting two .312 (32 caliber) BP roundballs behind 20grains of SR4759. The round balls land w/in 2.5 inches of each other at 50 yards anywhere inside an 8 to 10" circle.

Otherwise, keeping my shooting thumb away from my nose  , I use 3031 and Hornady 150 SP at moderate velocity. 3.5" 100 yard groups with the military leaf sights off a rest. With this load the recoil keeps setting the safety on. (?) :?

I've never felt that the rifle should be "sporterized". It just is what it is.

Best wishes,
Harold the herring choker.

Krochus:   Very nice sporter collection.  Please provide some details of the modifications on the 7.62X54.  I've sporterized a couple British Enfields and have been planning a Mosin project.  What type of sights?  Bolt handle?  Barrel modifications?  Which model did you use? etc.

Many thanks in advance.

Yes to all of the Above mentioned cartridges except the 7.7 Jap.
I am especially fond of the 7.65x53 Mauser. I have a model 1891
that is in pristine condition. It shoots as well as any other rifle I have and better than some. I do not Sporterize milsurp rifles because it absolutely
destroys any value they may have. I have seen some beautiful rifles though that folks have sunk several times the original purchase price
into. But when they sold them it was for less than what they had bought them for in the first place. A Mosin Nagant will always be a Mosin Nagant.
Besides, I like the old Mil. Spec. look anyway 8)

I actually bought the above rifles as they apperar in the pic. I don't believe in cutting up anu more milsurps than already have been. Luckly for me there are a lot of nice old sporters floating around.

On the Moisin the rifle is a Spanish Civil War rifle made in Tula 1937, The bolt knob is a turned down spoon shaped affair , Quite stylish in my poinion 8)  The front sight is a Redfield that uses a barrel band, the rear sight is a williams and lastly the stock is a really old Fajen that has been full length glass bedded.

For an Iron sighted rifle with a badly pitted bore it still shoots great. Below is a 100yd group that I fired from the bench.

Krockus:  Thank you for the reply and info.  It sounds like the Russian was sporterized a while ago.

I agree with your views on sporterizing.  My first Enfield was given to me by my father as a barrel and action that someone had begun sporterizing in the 1960's.  The rear sight had been milled and it was missing some minor parts.   The second was a complete rifle comprised of mismatched parts and wood that I picked up cheap at a gun show.  The barrel was bent at the top.  I had it cut back to 22'' and used the original butt stock with a sporter forend that I found at a gun show.  I've been keeping a look out for a beat up Mosin with matching bolt.
