T/C sight question
« on: May 21, 2006, 06:30:32 PM »
Can I get a higher front sight from T/C or some after market supplier? I recently traded for a 7mmTCU barrel and it shoots terribly high, as in 10" at 30 ft. I have the rear sight screwed down as low as it will go. This barrel may be dead on at 400yds or so but this does not do me any good when I am trying to work up loads for it.  Thanks Joe

I called T/C this morning, about 3 minutes on the phone, new higher front sight on the way.  Good customer service. Thanks again for the info.

Is this a common problem with Contender barrels? I have owned a few over the last several years but have never run into this before.

It happens with used barrels where the previous owner has removed the sights and puts any old one on from the junk box thinking they are all the same.  As you found out they are not.  The good news is that it is an easy fix.

Have fun.

Easy to fix brings up another question. When I get the new front sight will it be the whole thing or just the sight "blade"? If it's just the blade then is there anything more involved than driving the roll pin out and putting the new blade in?

It will be the whole thing.  You will just need to remove the two screws.

There is always a chance that the former owner
changed the rear sight to..... The blade should be about
.200... in hieght....There is 3 different rear sight hieghts
along with 6 different front sight hieghts.........
Go into search on GBO and look for contender sights
you will see my post with all the sizes... :D

Thanks for the info Zero.  I hope the new front sight will fix my problem, at least I won't be able to blame not hitting the target on the gun.  The rear sight is down as low as it will go, so I hope the next taller height will work.  I hope T/C doesn't send me another of the same height, probably not though, they seemed to understand what I was talking about.  I was comparing this sight to the one on my .32-20 barrel and this one is only about half as tall (7mmTCU by the way).
Here is another question, do you have to drill and tap more holes in a contender barrel to mount a scope, the only holes I see are for the rear sight?  Thanks Joe

Joe, Nope, The holes (4) are under your rear sight. You have to remove the rear sight to mount the scope base. GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt

Thanks to everyone who responded to my questions. T/C sent me a new front and rear sight. They came in the mail today and I just finished installing them, from first impressions I like the new style rear sight better. The front seems exactly the same just a little taller.  I should be on the front porch range first part of next week.  Thanks again guys. Joe

I received the same good service for a higher front sight.  Went out and tried it and it still shot high (12" high at 100').  So I made a new blade for the front sight.  Have not tried it yet.  A piece of brass is what I used.  Right now it is to high but when I get to go out I will file it down after each group of shots until I get it correct.

I had the same problem with one of my contender barrels but I just put a scope on it. That solved my problem. :o
