Williams WGRS H&R peep...

I recently bought one of these sights, thinking that it might have too small of a radius to fit the Handi bbls perfectly since it fits the Ruger 22 auto pistol too.

http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=698217

I was right - The sight base has a radius to fit the 1" diameter bbl of the Ruger, not the 1.115" diameter of the Handi. This might not be much of an issue, but I noticed that the thickness of the sight is quite thin where the rear screw goes, and will deform the base of the sight slightly if the rear screw is torqued down tightly since there is a gap between the center of the sight base and the top of the bbl. This may cause the elevation slide to jam at lower elevation settings.

I didn't like this situation, so I formed the correct radius on the base of the sight to match the Handi bbl diameter. The base could have been epoxy bedded to fix this also.

Another thing with this sight - The clamping screw for the elevation slide can fall partially into the rear base screw counterbore if it is set for lower height, thus not setting the elevation correctly and/or damaging the sight base at the counterbore.

Hmmm, that's odd, I've got 3 barrels with that sight on em and it's the standard sight for the BC and Target, no one has had a problem with it, many here have added it and are very happy with it. Perhaps they sent you a mispackaged product, Williams makes a bunch of WGRS sights for different applications.

Victor,

You are correct about the radius being too small for a perfect fit, however I just used blue loc-tite under it and haven't had any problem. An epoxy bed or machining the correct radius would have been a better fix, but I really don't think it will be a problem for most rifles. The biggest problem I see is that the sight will be at the top of the ramp for most applications. I put mine to the ultimate test last fall, climbing around in the Rockies for elk, worked just fine when I needed it to.

I would always prefer a slightly too small of radius on any base (scope or sight) before I wauld prefer a slightly too large radius, allowing the base to rock since the screws would be the only thing supporting it.

You're right about that - A larger than required radius would not allow the sight to sit solid on the bbl. Still, I don't like the gap that allows the sight to be deformed slightly if tightened down very tight (I'm probably being "nit-picky" though). I preferr sights and scope bases to fit perfectly to whatever they are mounted to. Most will not notice the gap and it will never be an issue for them.

The set screw on the elevation slide falling into the counterbore COULD be a real problem if the elevation were set low though. I damaged mine slightly just playing around with it.
