percussion cap ignition?
« on: May 23, 2006, 04:30:52 PM »
I'm finishing a 1/2 scale Mt. howitzer barrel and need suggestions for lanyard firing. I don't want to use a fuse and want the parts removable for display. Any ideas??

A gun that small and light might be difficult to fire with a lanyard. It might not have enough mass to resist the energy of pulling a lanyard and will move when fired.

My suggestion is to touch the Howitzer off with a slow match., no parts to remove that way., no parts to put on., machine., or clean., complete control.,reliability.,and simplicity.

Is there some reason the cap could not be fired by a spring loaded device like that on a black powder pistol? Then the lanyard would only have to be pulled hard enough to release the sear, not provide the energy to fire the cap.

Slowmatch in a linstock touched to a quill in the vent works just fine for me.  Or if you don't care to stand quite so close, a short piece of fuse will allow you to retreat a suitable distance.

I think I've decided on a spring loaded device that screws onto the nipple.
The resistance is minimal and it can be easily removed. I'll post pictures when I'm finished machining it.
Thanks for everyones input.
