Today I caught several large crappies. Two of them at the 13 inch mark. The biggest I have ever caught . My dig camera is broken otherwise I would share. Caught them on large fat head minnows and leeches. Found them in 2 feet of water on the northern shore of Secret Lake. I do have an eye witness.

How much would you say they weighed?  It amazing the difference between southern crappie and those from more northern climes.  We have a nearby lake, Grenada Lake that has a 13" minimum limit and one is only allowed to keep 30.  Most other north Ms.  Corp of Engineer lakes have a 10" minimum..I have a friend at church who caught two three lbers.  in one day.  The world record came from just down the road at Enid Lake..5-3..I blieve was its weight.  My largest is 2-4..which I was very proud of..

by sunfish do you mean bluegill?

Crappie have a very delicate sweet flavor..very white fleshed.  If forced to list my favorites my list would go something like this..
1.crappie
2.bluegill
3.sauger (smaller cousin to walleye) closest thing to a walleye we have around here)
4.catfish(perferably from the Tennessee River)
5.Striper
6.Rainbow trout

from what I've been told yellow perch are hard to beat on the table

Spinafish

Since we did not weight the 13 inch crappies, we can only estimate the weight at 1 pound and 10-12 oz. These fish fought like large bass, and when in the live well,  appeared to be very thick, like over 2".  I would put yellow perch near the top of my list of favorites to eat. What is stripper like to eat?

the flesh is very white and has a good flavor, but it requires alittle extra attention..I filet mine and after filleting you will find a wide red strip in the flesh...this needs to be removed.  Its a sensory gland that imparts a very strong flavor.  I usually just remove thin layers of it with a sharp filet knife till it is all removed.  It is a really good fish for grilling..season with your favorite seasoned salt, and grill till done..I usually use a basket designed for grilling fish to keep it from sticking to grill or falling through. Basting with butter or olive oil keeps it moist. Nothing wrong with frying it either..I usually cut the larger fish into 1 1/2 " cubes,so that they cook through more easily.

As far as live bait goes, it is really hard to beat minnow.  I make my own crappie jigs and have had great success on them.  Something along the lines of the Road Runner jigs is hard to beat..just about any small 1/32 to 1/16oz. jigs will catch crappies.  I like chartreuse, white, silver, and pink ( of all things).

I have had my best luck with leeches. Minnows are very good but not as durable as leeches.
