.308 Hand Load
« on: May 25, 2006, 02:22:54 PM »
Has anybody found a hand load for a .308 that groups well?  I have tried 150, 155 and 165 gr bullets and as many different powders but still can’t get a decent grouping.

Welcome aboard!! :D  Use the search feature, there are a few posts on .308 handloads, but most shoot factory loads real well.

How many rounds have been fired through the gun?

Its not uncommon for a 'new' gun (or barrel) to require a couple hundred rounds through the bore before it 'settles down' and really shows what it's accuracy and load-preferences.   8)

After reading the replies I used the search function and found several articles on new barrels needing several hundred rounds fired through them before they start grouping.  Since I only have about 50 rounds through this one I guess it’s back to range.  Thanks for the help.

LC Match cases, tumbled to factory finish
Primers: WLR
Powder: Hodgdon "Varget" 44 grs. +/-0
Heads: Hornady A-Max 168 grs. They are everything people say they are
recoil is very very mild.
I have proofed this loading on a 308Ultra at 100 yards and it's the real thing.
Try it, you might like it.

I forgot to mention that the finished length of the round is 2.950"; disregard my "P4" to you. I broke out my diary and took a look.  Don't get wound around the axle on this as specs. in loading manuals show National Match specs. of 2.810" good for an M-14 or M1A but not so good for H/R; those do not take into the equation the rather generous freebore which is a design characteristic of H/R weapons.  When you build your round, build a "dummy" lay it by and keep it for reference.  Seat the bullet and wash the ogive with a black Sharpie or Prussian Blue, seat and "reseat" the round until the lands "do not" bite into the guilding metal of the jacket.  With Sierra Matchings [168] that comes out to 2.910", with Hornady A-Maxs [168] that comes out to 2.950" due to its longer and gentler ogive.  Either bullet will give you very satisfactory groupings.
I will cose out here with a disclaimer of sorts.  All of the foregoing is a historical recital of what I did with my 308Ultra and not yours, and is representative of my own working method and rifle practice; it is not a general recommendation for all other situations.   Take all of the foregoings and treat "it all" with tenderness and objectivity.

A handy tool for attaining Cartridge Overall Length is Randy's COL gauge, I have one of these and it's a slick tool, one of my better investments of $25!! 8)

I have had good results with 150g Remington CLs and Reloader 7 loads.  Perhaps I am lucky but my heavy barrel .308 came out of the box shooting better than I can.  Gun took two deer with these loads last season.
