K31 range time
« on: May 27, 2006, 03:26:46 PM »
I bought 2 k31's some time ago and finally got them to the range. From all the positive things that I read and heard about these guns I was still pleasantly surprised. The groups measured 1.5 inches at 50 yards. Thats good for me and iron sight since I am some what out of practice. The k31 functioned flawlessly. I like the detachable positive locking clips that to my surprize hold six rounds. The operation of the bolt was easy and interesting. I used some basic hand loads. A mid range amount of imr 4350 and 150 grain corelokt bullets. I fired 40 rounds with no problems. I saved the last six rounds for rapid fire testing. The rapid fire was interesting and effective. I love these guns.

Here is my best group so far.  This is my handloads.  3 shot group from 70 yards.

This was one of my early targets using the K31. http://www.geocities.com/qajaq59/k31target.html Now I shoot it only at 200 yards. My groups at the 200 aren't this good but they aren't too bad either. I'd say a K31 is capable of shooting a lot better then most people can shoot them. It would be interesting to see what they'd do with a scope, but I think that might take all the fun out of it.

After hearing about all the great accuracy most are having with the swiss k31 I been looking for a so/so condition one to scope for my long range target rifle over building a 308/98k mauser setup right now.  I hope the 7,5mm swiss performs as great as everyone says it does.  I figure its close to a 308 in performance i haven't looked at the ballastics yet. I'm interested in staying between the 140gr to 150gr bullets.  I'm looking to shoot 100, 200, 300, 400 & 500+ and it should shoot better than i can at least i think so anyway.  I have a swiss k31 with no owners tag under the butt plate thats my victum.  I won't use a swiss k31 with an owners tag. My only problem is they look so great after refinishing and even the fair condition ones look like excellent condition ones when i'm done that i hate to touch them but i have to pick one soon.

I have heard that some of these may need only a touch up on the crowning if there not too accurate.

Do you guys think the 7,5mm compares in ballastics to the 308 to go with the 7,5mm over the 308win/nato?  Any input?  I haven't touched anything yet......... I'm looking for bragging rights at the range when it out shoots everything.

Aim Surplus has priv-partizan ammo in military calibers and its yugo boxer primed brass too.  Its cheaper to buy the priv-partizan 7,5mm swiss and shoot it once to get the brass to reload rather than buy the expensive new brass.

If it is allowed at your range use the GP11 military ammo for good accuracy. You can reload to it's level but it requires a little bit of being fussy. Also you might do better with a heavier bullet, although I shoot 150 gr in mine.

I've had good results with the GP-11. Many on Cruffler and other boards have posted that it's near match quality stuff. I bought a case and a half.

All I know is that my K31 is my most accurate milsurp rifle, and I've got lots of Mausers and other fine milsurps. As soon as I get a MOJO sight for it, it should do even better. The stock sights are hard for me to see.

I think the ballistics are close.  I have to be honest with you.  I have 2 K31's and although I like them if you are looking for bragging rights you might think about going with a good 308.

Here is the best group I have got with my K31 so far.  And these are with my reloads.  Keep in mind this is my K31 with me doing the shooting and my reloads.  Others will have different results.

I have since replaced the scout mount with this, a regular scope mount and expect to reload some more and do better with the new scope and mount as I didn't like the scout type scope and mount.

I picked up a St. Marie scopemount that screws on and a St. Maire muzzle brake that threads on the end of the barrel with a 14mm RH thread.  I also have a 1" thich large recoil pad if its needed too.  I figure to tame the recoil down as much as i can too.  I also picked up a Tru-Glo scope on sale its a 6-24x44 AO with sunshade for now, down the road if something better is on sale i may bump it up to a better scope.

Very nice. Tell me about the bullets and the scope you used. I use the same brass, powder and primers. Or.... maybe.... you used the original iron sights.
Your target matches my Swedish 96 in accuracy at 200 yards. I have yet to shoot my k31 at 100 or 200 yards. These old guns continue to amaze me, they match or better new high end rifles.

Ch,

My rilfe is a walnut stocked Swiss 7.5x55 Schmidt-Rubin K-31 made in 1945 by Waffen Fabrick Bern - Bern.  Was owned by Julius Widner, Dragoon Squadron 20, Widnau, Switzerland.  All 6 Serial numbers match.  Came with original sling, snow cap and 3 stripper clips for $94!  Stock looked like a POS – I steamed the dents and restored the finish.

Scope is a Leupold 2.5x scout scope mounted to the rear sight area using an S&K scout mount.  Reloads are 165 SGKs per info on target at just over 2,700 fps per chrono.  This scout scope combined with the straight pull of the K-31 is just great! - Fastest "get'er on target - keep'em on target" deer rifle I have.

Beautiful rifle, especially the wood and refinish. Great shooting, good clean fun. Very satisfying I would bet. I have long been curious about 200 yard accuracy of a scoped k31.
