Well, that weather guy might be funny, but I'm not laughing at the drought.
We're not even seeing red wasps or yellow jackets out in the woods anymore this summer.
Not that I like those of course, but it shows you how bad things are getting.

Yellowjackets are nasty in dry weather.  They go after the moisture on the back of one's neck. >:(

Still no rain around here most all of August.
Long range outlook says September / October may not be much better either.

Wonder how this is effecting the deer herd.  Anyone seeing any bucks?  How do their entlers look?   A long drought in W. Tx several years back sure had the antlers rather small.  The first spring with alot of rain changed that for the following year though..   Read that wells in Dripping Springs area are going dry.  Some of this has been due to the growth of neighborhoods and such though...

Been running trail cams the last 3 weeks.
Saw 1 doe 1 time at 1 feeder.
Then again, the hogs have made it rough for the deer out there to start with.
No large hogs seen either, just smaller stuff topping out at 150 pounds max I'd say.
A guy I know 5 miles south of Pipe Creek is also having trouble with his
well running out now. Not looking good at all.

Basically no rain to speak of since around the 4th of July.
( Sept 2 now ) We had a whopping 1/10th of an inch here a week or so back.
Still have a few things showing up at the feeder, like this old looking hog:

We are just now getting rain today / early this morning.
A little over a 1/2 inch here in NE San Antonio so far.
What I don't know yet is if the area north of Hondo has had any.
I'll know on that within the next couple of days.

OK, we had .6 inches of rain north of Hondo Tuesday, 5th Sept.
Today ( Sept 11th ) we got another 1.8 inches out there.
I hope this keeps up for a while !

Sept 18th....In spite of all the local hoopla with the weather
forecast, the rain was very spotty in this general area again.
We got .6 here in NE San Antonio.
Medina County did not get much more than that in most areas
from the looks of it. Some areas got nothing at all, based
on the radar estimated rainfall totals.
It now appears that Uvalde County did much better than
either Medina or Bexar County did the last two days.
Bandera County was the same story, the west side had all
the luck. Eastern Bandera County got little to nothing.
Although we've had enough rain lately to green things up, we still don't have the
amounts needed to get the stock tanks catching any water.

We mowed the grass at my friend's place for the first time this

October 7th....looks like another dry period, at least so far this month.
A check of my area shows very very few acorns on the ground.
Good in a way, animals will hit the feeders. Bad overall for them going into
the winter of course.

Since my last post we might have had a couple of 1/2 inch rains.
Here it is December now, and the cooler weather helps some.
If it were hotter, things would be really bad.
Many areas of the state have done some better as I understand it, but for some
reason the San Antonio area and west of here have not picked up that much rain still.

Not much rain falling now, but a steady off and on drizzle to light rain since late yesterday and still today.   Hopefully it is soaking in since it is falling so slowly.  I hope the hill country gets some of this...

One extreme to another !
After several months of some rain now and then, things really cut loose yesterday. ( 26 March )
3 inches of rain north of Hondo, maybe more around the Tarpley area.
The creek along FM 462 flooded, after being dry for a good two years.
Stock tanks in the area have finally caught a fair amount of water.
With any luck at all, the situation will remain good through the summer.
The area has greened up fast, blue bonnets are out, all of that type of thing.

I hunt a place near LaPryor each yr after Christmas....last yr, ( or I hguess I should say Dec 26th through Jan 10th ....it was bone dry there....the tanks were all low to non existant....the qail were scare, and the deer were not exactly trophy sized .....I noticed on accuweatehr , LaPryor says it has had 5.94 inches.......I know that can vary ALOT from one ranch to the next........anyone know if the stretch in Zavala county is getting this rain ?

Been some time since I posted here.
What happened was, the area north of Hondo ended getting about 50 inches of rain in 2007 !!
BUT, the rain pretty much cut off as fast as it started the first week of August 2007.
Now it's January 2008, and things are back to being too dry again around this area.
What a roller coaster ride, sheesh !

Exactly right....I just got back from S Texas tonight.......too late to post pics...my son shot a nice 12...I shot one as well, ( not as nice as his though)......as you said....what once was  lush green , is now a tinder box....tanks were also surprisingly low, I mean , more than last year, but some were actually less??? go figure..However, the deer were MUCH better overall..quality bucks....and saw a couple that were just jaw droppers.....if you've ever hunted much South Texas....you know those huge ghosts , can disappear before you can say "take off the safety "...and he did.....I have had big bucks bust on me.....but his one will haunt me...I have never seen a deer this massive in real life...( antlers I mean....not mass of body ) It was  something I will not soon forget..bedtime for me , pics to come

March 26, 2008:
Northern Medina county has had maybe 2 inches of rain since August 2007 now.
We got the biggest part of that on March 10Th, 1.5 inches at one time.
Things are still too dry. Only have a single boar hitting the feeder on a regular basis at this time.
( Based on a 10 day time period of photos. )

Hard to believe there is still a drought in some areas of Texas. I have been watching the USGS site all week hoping the Trinity river would be back in its banks by this weekend. I will know when I get there and see the high water marks inside my deer stand, but based on the water levels I've seen I estimate that the water was about 8 - 9 feet deep at setup. :'(  The highest before was 7'.

Looks like our place in Zavala county is severe as well.........last yr, had almost 40 inches of rain....when we got there to hunt in late December , it was bone dry .....creek was flowing, which was really strange for that time of yr.....and some tanks were higher....but some were lower...???   We still have no idea how...hope some systems come through , with rain...and not alot of lightning.....I will hope  and pray for a good rain there....
