Tried my new Winchester 375 H&H yesterday
« on: May 29, 2006, 09:02:49 AM »
Took my newly acquired Winchester model 70 Super Express .375 H&H to the range yesterday just to give it a try. Used two bullet weights, 270 g sp / 69 g powder (reloads which came with the rifle) and some 300 g solids / 58 g powder, which incidentally were my first ever attempt at loading.

I expected the rifle to kick hard as I was shooting prone, but after the first couple of shots I forgot about the recoil and just enjoyed shooting the rifle. Distance was 300 yards on the day (it varies from 100 – 600 y ) and I was using the iron sights, I do have a scope rail & rings so will be fitting a scope at some point soon. Normally I will be using this rifle at 100 - 200 yards so don’t want a powerful scope.

I bought the rifle second hand from someone who had used it hunting out in Africa. I paid £390 which included scope rail/rings, 55 loaded rounds, spare bullets, 150 fired cases and reloading dies.

Must say I am really pleased with this rifle and the fact that my home loads worked.

How good were the groups you obtained ?
What powder did you use ?
You mentioned how much powder, but not what type.

Sorry, the 270 grain rounds had 69 grains of Hodgdon H4895. I used 58 grains of Hodgdon Varget with a 300 grain solid in the rounds that I loaded.

The rifle was shooting rather low as I suspect it had been zeroed for a hundred yards, maybe even less. I will re-set the sites next time I am at the 100 yard range.

PDR:

Great! That's the way I got my 375, except it was used to hunt Alaska instead of Africa. The recoil was a pleasant surprise to me too.  We have 235 grain bullets available too with velocities about the same as a 150 grain 30-06.  Same recoil, but different game intended for it.
