Steel trigger guard
« on: May 29, 2006, 06:11:52 PM »
I just got two sets of steel trigger guard/forend pieces. Unfortunately one guard is going back since it looks like someone had already tried to fit it and filed the trigger slot way oversize :( .

I'm impressed with the machining and polishing on the guards. Very nicely done, and I can see why they are so expensive. They are milled from bar stock, not an investment casting like I was half expecting.

Did (Or do they now) H&R put these on any rifles they sell, or is it only supplied as a replacement part?

Certainly a nice addition to their rifles for folks like me who have "Plastiphobia".

The Buff Classic and the Target models came with them at one time..from what I recall..They stopped putting them on them to keep the cost down on the rifles..The Steel forend spacer compliments them extreamly well too....it too is of the same construction..

I would think that many of those deciding to buy the BC or Target model, If asked, would say that they would be willing to pay a bit more for it with the steel parts.

To me, these nice rifles with plastic parts on them are like a pretty lady in an evening gown wearing ear rings dug out of a box of Cracker Jacks.

I'm glad that they offer the replacement parts. I wonder if H&R is just selling off old stock that was originally meant to be installed on these rifles or if they will keep producing the steel parts...

Parts numbers and prices are in the FAQ and Help sticky in the 2005 Retail Parts Price list, order from H&R.

Tim, what parts interchange? I thought about buying a used shotgun for the buttstock, if it had a steel trigger guard I would be money ahead. But will the trigger guard and stock fit the BC, and how do I find out?

All current production H&R/NEF stocks will interchange and fit SB1 or SB2 frames, most forends will fit, if not, a little opening up of the barrel channel may be needed for larger barrel contours, unless the 10ga is involved which is another matter from what I've learned here.

Can't tell ya if the internal parts are the same, other than pre-Marlin H&Rs didn't have a transfer bar.  I have an early 1900's H&R 12gauge, it's at Dad's right now, I'll have to check it out to see if there are any similarities other than basic design,  I know the forend snaps on, no screw.

The steel forend spacer fits all current wood stocks, the steel trigger guard needs to be fitted or the front pin hole in the guard won't align with the holes in the frame.

I don't think you'll find an old H&R (Like the Topper) with a steel trigger guard that will fit the new rifles. My 70's vintage ones have plastic guards and forend pieces, and I've never seen an old one (No transfer bar) that had a steel guard. The stocks on the old Toppers I have fit on the new SB2 I have and vise-versa though.

The newer trigger guards have a step to accomodate the lever for the transfer bar next to the trigger. The old ones without the transfer bar do not have this step and can't be used on transfer bar equipped rifles/shotguns without modification. New trigger guards can be used on the older guns as far as I can tell, but a small washer or shim may be required to take up the space left by the transfer bar lever (Which of course is not there on older guns) so the old style hammer spring doesn't fall into it on the left side. This MAY not be required though. I still have to do some fitting to see if it's needed or not, but the trigger may have some side-play without it...

Edit..... PS - The forend piece on the old & new rifles/shotguns (Old Topper/new Handi that is) appears to be exactly the same.
