Savage 99 Takedown ???
« on: May 30, 2006, 02:09:29 AM »
I have several old 99's, but never a takedown.  Probably because most of the ones I looked at had loose barrels.  Never had a 22 Hi-Power either.  Enter one pretty little carbine takedown in, you guessed it, 22 Hi-Power with a great fitting barrel and otherwise very good condition.  Serial # is 145,xxx(1913). It has a tapered 20" barrel with the Utica address and Model 1899 markings.  The front sight is the short version of the intgral base while the rear is a double blade folding leaf.  Both blades will fold down out of the way, which is especially nice since it also sports a beautiful old Marble tang mounted peep that was obviously added a long time ago.  Rear stock is straight grip perch belly with unfortunately a hard plastic shotgun style but plate.  The forend is a straight tapered schobel as I think all takedowns were but here is my biggest question.  About halfway between the forend latch and the rear of the forend on the inside is a 1/2" round piece of metal with a 5/16" square cutout embedded(appears to be factory done) in the forend.  I don't recall seeing this on any other 99 forend.  What is it??? Is it rare?...factory?...or my senile old mind just kicking in.  Also, I didn't see any sign of a serial # on the forend.  I would have halfway expected Savage to serial # the barrels on takedown's.  Help! THANKS & GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt

The square hole in the forearm fits over the takedown stud on the barrel to aid in unscrewing the barrel. Don't hold the rifle's buttstock while doing this or you risk cracking the stock, hold the receiver.

Thanks rim-fire, I knew there would be a good explanation for it.  I should have been able to figure that one out myself.  I've bound to have seen one before because i've looked at several takedown models before.  That's where the senile old mind sets in.  thanks again, Walt

I really like my little 1925 vintage 99 TD .30-30/.38-55. The barrels can be unthreaded with two fingers, and it always returns to zero when they are replaced. It also has a Redfield receiver sight mounted in two of the factory drilled holes on the tang.

I get my kicks from an 1886.

Well, you guys talked me into it (not that I needed much help), the little 99H followed me home last night.  That gives me one each in each of Savages original calibers; 22 High Power, .303, .250, and.300 Savage.  I knew that I was already hooked and was just going through the motions haggling with the dealer, when he said "Oh by the way" there's also three old boxes of ammo that go with it. One box was an old green box of Remington and two were the old UMC white box with red print with the round corners. Now if anybody knows the where-a-bouts of an old Savage hard rubber butt plate that fits the 99H, I'd be much obliged.

Savage .250 you're right, I've been puttin' off buying Murry's book much too long already. Now's the time. Thanks and GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt

I just picked up a 99 in 250-3000 and it is a takedown too. It was incredibly dirty, was tied to the back of a 75 year old tractor. It isn't rusty, but I am having a heck of a time getting it to break down. Anyone wana give me a little insight on which direction it should turn? Thanks for the help.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.
