Has your CCW gotten bigger, smaller or stayed the same
« on: June 01, 2006, 03:47:05 PM »
When I first started carrying, a Kahr MK9 seemed as big as a cannon. I now regularily carry guns MUCH bigger (Sig 229, Para Tac-4, etc.) without a problem. How has your CCW gun evolved? Bigger? Smaller? Or remained the same?

Leave it too me to examine all--and find an arguement :P .
I have found much/many different calibers in my days of collecting, some/most are smaller than the original .45 purchased but they are different rather than smaller or larger.
The 357Sig is smaller but faster, as is the 9x23 or 38Super.
I guess what I am saying is all are an attempt to be different and compensate wieght with speed. Or so it is with most, the PPK is the attempt at more comfortable carry with protection still the thought.

Sig Pro and Sig 226, looking into adding another Sig and the 229 might be next. Actually interested in the 239, although for me thats getting a little 2 tiny.

Much smaller. I had a 4" S&W 686 as my mainstay. Man, was that thing a boat anchor. Now my CCW is down to "no size at all", because I don't carry. However, I've been known to carry a NA Mini in my cigarette pack, in case I happen upon a vicious band of near-sighted mosquitos. :)

Maybe I should have been more clear'er. I was referring to the size of the actual gun and not the caliber.

But since you brought it up ... I use to carry a 9mm exclusively. Now, I carry a 9mm only whenever I can't carry a .40S&W or .45ACP.

:cb2: I've been carrying a Glock 21 since '93, and there's not too many bigger than that except huntin' guns! Sometimes, I carry my 4" S&W M57 at night because it has night sights, but that really isn't much smaller, if any!

But last night I strapped on my old pencil barrel M10 when I went out, and gosh did it ever feel light! Hmmmmmm . . . . May be on to something here!

As pistols have eveloved with larger calibers now in much smaller/lighter envelopes, my CCWs have gotten smaller. I carry 24/7 and like to be as comfortable as possible. That means small and light, but yet in a semiserious caliber. .380 is as small as I carry. (P-3AT)

the grip is small enough for me to notice a difference, I dont know if Id like shooting it much. I like something I can wrap my hand around and feel 110% comfortable with. Im not into the whole "go small" idea. Give me a full size 226 to put a   on my face. Its been 18 months and not once has a full frame pistol posed a problem to me. What I do like about the 239 is that its offered in .40s&w, that makes it very appealing to me. I cant help Sig makes so many great models... the Equinox next  :D

I must be boring - I am still using the same six inch Ruger Security-Six that I started out with 35 years ago. I have a couple of other hand guns that I could use but they just aren't as comfortable and I don't have the same level of confidence in them that have in my Ruger.

What's so special about the Equinox? Everybody seems to be wanting one. Did I make a mistake in getting the 229 SAS instead of the Equinox?

I've been collecting (or I should say accumulating) handguns since I first got my permit. I tend to let climate and dress mode dictate what I carry.  I like to carry the biggest pistol that I can.  In the glove box I usually have a full size 1911 or a Glock 17.  On my person I'll go with the Glock 27 or a snubbie of some sort.

In winter, those car guns are usually on my hip.

I have stayed pretty much with the Khar P9, 100% reliable and can get a good grip.  Very accurate for such a light and small pistol.  Have aquired a khar P45, but have not fired enough rounds through it to completely trust it.  It shoots well and has a very manageable recoil level.

Some times will have to utilize a Keltec P3AT, because it fits pocket better than Khar.

Good shooting,

jebsr  :-)

Well...It depends on the season...Smaller sidearm (Kel-Tec P3AT) in the summer and back to the Glock 23 or S&W Model 6904 for the cold weather.

Since my first carry gun was a Smith model 10 w/2" barrel,  I'd have to say I've gone in BOTH directions since then.

The clothes I wear for the occasion is the real determining factor. Sometimes,  very small is better than nothing at all.....at other times, 45acp is an option. :D

I didn't vote, because the best answer for me isn't an option.

Stayed the same. I started with a Springer Ultra Compact 45ACP in a Milt Sparks Summer Special II and stuck with it. Have for almost two years now.

Here in Georgia it's difficult to carry anything sizable while in shorts and a Tshirt (about 6 monthes out of the year). Shorts mean I carry either a kel Tec .32 or a S&W mod 38. Jeans/slacks means I can carry whatever, most freguently a Charter Arms Bulldog in .44 spec or a Glock 19. Mostly I prefer a revolver. Our CCW here is not limited to any single handgun. As an aside, the car gun is a 12 gauge, no need to carry a handgun there.

I have become what I used to criticize. An old fart. In my younger days as a police officer old Sheriffs and Rangers (I'm from Texas) used to come into my office with a 1911 stuck in their pants with no holster. Yuk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, I'm almost 60 and here I am. Walking out the door with a 1911 stuck in my waist band. And it works with when I wear shorts and t-shirt too. Ho-Boy! Careful who you make fun of.

Well Dee, at least you have a gun that will do the job. I most often carry my 357 but in the three weeks of warm weather I have to choose something a little smaller than a six inch barrel - I have a 45 Colt single shot with a 3" barrel - and I carry one extra round. Not much defense but its better than nothing.

intarestin..

mine changes constanly, every time I get a new firearm.I take her all apart and clean and debur it then out to the range for some testin.reliability, function & accuracy.if I can not find a decent holster for it I just slip it between the waist band and the skin..I normally have two with me..a biggin and a littlin..
But,I find myself fancyin the 9x18s I have all the come bloc ones from each country, and all the differt models and the Czs are sooooo cool I have several of them..
I used to think that I should stick with one.so I would not try and take the safety off on the glock.are just pull the trigger on the 1911..and I allways hope they just stay snuggeld in thier nest.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

Definitly down, and may go smaller when I buy my next handgun. Para O P12-45 to a S & W 637 Airweight. Carrying is a hastle for me living in extreme south FL. It's over 90 with over 90% humidity at least 7 or 8 months out of the year. Talk about sweat. Although I do work indoors but just step outside for 2 minutes or walk to your car and your soaked. But, I carry because I own retail stores and they seem to be a target.

About the same.  The little guns just don't interest me.

This little .44 special is slick and easy to conceal.  I also don't worry about terminal performance.  I just shoot a couple of hundred rounds a week from the leather and I am in good shape.

Well, I thought I replied to this a couple of times but that was when Graybeard was having difficulties.  So here we go again.  My carry gun has changed but stayed the same.  I started out carrying a Charter .38 and soon added a Star PD .45.  It would depend on what I was wearing, which gun I would carry.  That was over 25 years ago and my favorite carrys guns now are a Colt Defender .45 and a S&W Airweight .38.  I tried lots of others in between but keep coming back to these guns.  And it still depends on what I am going to wear that day which I carry.  Usually the .45 but if I am in a t-shirt or riding the motorcycle (the gun butt would stick out into my wife's thigh with the .45) then I carry the .38.  44 Man

Actually, mine has varied, ebbed and flowed. I think that I prefer larger, 1911 combat as compared to the PPK but I have purchased smaller and have, recently, considered a Kahr and Kimber sub-compact.
That said, if judgement is needed, I would confess to larger-witnessed bythe desire and saving for a 6" longslide. Still debating withim myownself as to the caliber---.38 super makes me drool the most at the moment I type.
