well we finally got the mortar done, so we took it out and put some rounds through it. started with 1 oz. 2f cannon powder, it went 78 yds.
The next load was 2 0z at 30 deg. angle it went 137 yds.
3rd round 3 0z at 40 deg. went 254 yrds.
4th round 3.5 oz and 200 grs. of fff rifle, it went 352yds.
that ended the test, which showed us that the same powder charge for this mortar is just about the same as our bowling ball mortars. we now will start testing for repeatability

What is the diameter of you powder chamber?

You said 2F cannon powder. Do you mean 2F or Cannon powder they are different grades.

To the best of my finding and buying this powder, they grade it just the same way as rifle powder. they use a mesh size to grade it. The first batch was listed as blasting powder, then the next was cannon powder, cannon powder is not coated, where rifle is a coated powder. the first batch looked like pea gravel, but worked ok. the newer , fff cannon powder is a lot finer grains and faster burning, this is the powder we are now using.

Unless things have changed, cannon is a grade of black powder and is not broken down beyond that. Fg is for large bores shotguns mortars ect. FFg is the primary rifle powder. FFFg is small bore rifle and the primary pistol powder. This should not be used in mortars and or cannons. The finer grains can cause funny pressure problems.
All of the f graded powders should be polished. Some of the newer powder does not seem to be glazed, polished as it was in the past.

Check and make sure of your powder is either cannon of Fg.

first i'm sorry if i led you to believe it's rifle or cannon powder, it's a grade of blasting powder. check out this site.

Got it. It was the FFF that had me worried. What you were using if falls between cannon and Fg. Cool!
Is the blasting powder cheaper than the sporting powder?

I think that is what Powderinc sells as "Skirmish Powder". Per PowderInc,
it is unglazed and falls somewhere between 1F and Cannon in mesh size.

Skirmish is not FA. FA is blasting powder a whole different animal.

this powder is a lot cheaper ! last batch we bought was around $8 to 9 bucks a pound.
