The Heritage single action revolver can be had for well under $200 around here with both a .22 lr and .22 magnum cylinders. I have never shot one and you will get mixed reviews. There is a thread in the single action forum now that talks about them.

It depends on what you want it for, but good guns cost more than that. If you can scrape up another $50 to get into the $250 range you start to find lots of good quality guns that you'll be happier with in the long run.

I have had both the Taurus PT22 and the Bobcat. From my experience with the two, I would take the Taurus everytime for both dependibility and accuracy. My Bobcat was bad!!! I do agree with Questor, if you could get up to the $250 range you could start looking at things like the Ruger 22/45. I have one of those with the 6" barrel and it is very dependable and accurate.

The bare bones Browning Buckmark is going for $249 @ Gander Mtn right now...I own that same pistol and it shoots great...Especially for the price I paid.

If just for plinkin the Heritage single actions will fit the bill (under $200)-- could get a semiauto for plinkin in the $250 to $300 range from various makers.

If it's for self defense your gonna go $250 and up -- you could get a Bersa or Kel-Tec .380 anywhere from $250ish up to $350 depending on the dealer.

I forgot about my Heritage Rough Rider.......for the money I think its a darn nice gun.

I paid $125 with both the .22lr and .22mag cylinders - I believe thats the going rate.  No problems so far.  I have shot a Ruger Single Six .22 and the difference between the two didnt justify the price for me........as I was just plinkin.  If your going to do small game hunting then it may.

If its for self defense go with something larger than a .22.  I saw a few weeks ago a semi-auto 9mm that seemed to be put together fairly well for just over $100.  I don't know that I would trust my life to it, but it would be better than a .22.  Since I suffer from CRS I don't recall who made it.  Sorry.

Take a look at a used Ruger MK ll.  Nice balance, good triggers right out of the box, The ones that I have owned and used weren't to fussy about types of ammo, and have been pretty much trouble free....Jim

Any Highpoint is less than $200 ($145 for a 45ACP at my local gunshop).
I aim to please - but often miss.

There are plenty of Buckmarks on the used market for less than $200. Just saw one (in overly-expensive Connecticut) the other day for $189. I got mine for $200 even. A new one isn't much more. This is if you're looking for a target gun, since the Buckmark is so easy to upgrade. If you're looking for a plinker, heck, I could recommend the little Beretta tip-up-barrels, an H&R revolver, a Ruger Single Six, or any Taurus 8-shot wheelgun. All can be found used for under $200. My personal favorite fun pistol was the Iver-Johnson TP-22. It's basically a PPK knock-off. I used to see a lot of them. Not the most durable piece in the world, but lots of fun to plink with.

Hello
Sound advice from responder Questor. If durability, Eye appeal, and having something worth fighting over in your Will, I would spend the extra and buy a K-22 S&W revolver. ;) They can't be beat and this shows by 75 Years of Proven design and many out there used. The few buck's saved now, will soon wear off with durabilty issues at a later Time. :'( Here is one that has been around since September 1931 and still get's used often. :o  Hammerdown.
