SR4759 for 405 casts BC load development
« on: June 03, 2006, 01:01:36 PM »
Hello guys glad I found you!
Been shooting a BC for a year now and casting my own bullets for her.
did a few searches but never seen what i was after.
Had real good luck in the accuracy department with 500 grain casts and a dose of 25.2 gr of 4759.
Has anyone tried the 405s with this powder and how were the results.

What is your feeling with filler for this powder and heavier bullets?

Regards
Jason
So what my spelling is not the best,
But I can shoot straight!!!!!

Welcome aboard, Jason!! :D  I have only used XMP5744 in my .45-120 BC with my cast loads, but I have some SR4759 that I haven't tried, it's supposed to be the cats meow for reduced loads, although the 5744 works great. All data that I've read from Accurate and Hodgdon says not to use fillers, so I haven't, hasn't been a problem even with 50% case density in the big .45-120 case which is considerably bigger than a .45-70 case.

The only 405gr bullets I've shot are the rem jacketed and Cast Performance WFNGC. My preference has been for the 525gr Beartooth Piledriver, but the only thing I've killed with it is paper!! Down the page is a thread by Grizz and a link to his penetration test thru a dozen water bottles with this bullet!!

Welcome aboard the crazy world of Handi-holics . I just resently began loading for my 45/70 handi and have been very pleased with a load of 12 grains of Unique and the 405 grain cast bullet .

http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/RecipeDetail.aspx?title=Cowboy%20Load&gtypeid=5&weight=405&shellid=1009&bulletid=449

they also list a Unique load for the 300 grain fp .

http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/RecipeDetail.aspx?title=Cowboy%20Load&gtypeid=5&weight=300&shellid=1009&bulletid=7

Both have very light recoil and a clean burn on this powder with no filler . at this low a charge rate you can get a whole heep of rounds from a pound of powder .  :D

Not the powder that you are using, but I use 40 grains of varget under the Lee 405 RNFP wheel weight bullet. Hasnt done bad out of my 22 inch handi, but I havent had the chance to really sit down and see how good it can shoot yet. Gotta get my peep sights on first. It goes somewhere around 1400 FPS, and doesnt kick too bad.  The reason I tried it was simply because that is the powder I had, and the lee book had a load for it.

I was realy lucky to aquire a very fine Parker Hale rear apature for my BC it was fitted at the gunsmith and what a difference it made. I should post a picture of it for you.
I found the Peep that was on it did not have the elevation needed to shoot out at distance, so I doubled the price or the gun per say buy addig a high end target rear site. Can't wait to play with the gun tomorrow.
According to my velocity this rear will take me beyond the 1000 mark.
Now if I can shoot that thats another story!

We need pictures please. There is a 5 dollar fine for not posting pictures, especially one of a BC with a very fine sight. :-D

HUMM intresting results today with the 405s and 4759, loaded a bunch up with 28.0 gr and seated at sammi 2.550 never shot worth beans? 3-5 inches at 100 however I managed a 3 " group % shot should add with 36.0 gr of 3031 and mag primers.

Any suggestions to tighten the group up?

What is the max load for this powder, and what primers were you using? I saw neither listed in that website.

My Buff will not shoot soft cast lead accurately past 1250fps. If I want to exceed this and maintain accuracy, I have to go to a gas check bullet or jacketed round. I can get to 1400 fps with reasonable accuracy (3 inch group at 100) with the Laser cast 405 bullets.

My favorite plinking rounds remain 11 grains Unique or 25 grns of XMP5744.
Of course you can run faster than those bullets, but good accuracy for paper punching!
