most accurate factory load in your handi or ultra
« on: June 04, 2006, 03:33:58 PM »
From a previous post, got my son a .30-06 ultra.  He doesn't handload, so it will be factory loads.  Since we are going on a black bear hunt in Idaho, in Sept., I would like to find a good 180 gr. load for him to use.  There is a huge amount of ammo out there, so I was wondering, for those using factory ammo, what have you found to be the most accurate in your handi/ultra?  I know every rifle is different, but it might give me a good starting point.  Thanks.

To bad you have ruled out hand loads. As with a bit of work these will give you the best accuracy.

The only factory load I have had good luck with has been the Federal Premium loads.

Good luck,

I handload for mine, but if I were looking for factory ammo, I'd first try Federal Fusion, it shoots real good in every caliber that I've tried and the same is true for others that have tried it. Price is right, too!

My dads handi 30/06 was more accurate then my remington 700 no lie and he used the remington 180 grain PSPCL he sold that rifle to a good friend of mine who said he loves the remington 150 grain PSPCL both would work on bear but if it were me i tend to like the 180's .Those remingtons outshot winchester federal and hornady factory ammo but like you said all rifles are different, but i would give those remingtons a try . Good luck Tanoose

I use the Winchester 150 grain Power Points in mine and they work great. They will shoot 1" to 1-1/2" consistently and that's all I'm looking for.

Probably not much help to you but my Weatherby Vanguard 30-06 prefers the heavier 180gr. bullets over the lighter ones like 150gr. as far as accuracy is concerned.

My -06 Comp barrel likes the 180grains real well. Factory loads that shoot the best in mine-
Federal Fusions
Winchester Silvertips
Federal Power Shocks
These have been my best sucess with the -06 in a Handi. As mentioned the Super-X's shoot decent too.
Seriously consider reloading. It's easy to pick up, relaxing, and very rewarding once you work up a "Magic Load".
And you won't be limited to your 1 box of ammo on hand, and your out...you can work up as many as you need(provided you have the supplies=cheap) and the possibilites are limitless.
