Sportster 22LR is shooting much better now!
« on: June 06, 2006, 09:48:17 AM »
I've had a Sportster 22LR for a while now.  It has always shot "OK", but when compared to my other 22LR's it just seemed like it could shoot a little better.  It wasn't bad enough for me to send back to NEF or anything, just sort of "average".  I checked my scope, and put an O-ring under the forearm, but it was still just "OK".  I tried many different kinds of ammo...still just "OK".

I wasn't expecting  the same accuracy I get from my NEF 22WMR, 17HMR, or .223, but I was hoping that I could make it shoot a little better.  I  decided to give the bore a good polishing with some Flitz...and that was the ticket.  Now it's much better.

It's easier to clean now too

It's easier to clean now too.  I used to have to keep pushing patch after patch through that barrel and they never came out clean.  It was "clean" when the patches came out almost clean.

I should have tried this a long time ago.

Moonlitin,

I have a Sportster 22LR also and had the same experience with mediocre groups as well.  Tried 7 different brands of ammo and the best group I could get at 50 yards was just under 2 inches.  After reading your post I "FLITZed" the bore and while two brands of ammo showed no improvement, the other 5 averaged a 40% reduction in group size!

CCI Green Tag resulted in 7/8" group for 5 shots with 4 shots in 1/2".  Think I'll work on the trigger next.  Thanks for the suggestion!

Trigger work instructions are in the NEF/H&R Centerfire FAQ and Help sticky along with bore polishing instructions.

Thanks for the heads up Tim.  I've already printed off Perkalo's instructions.  Lots of pages, but I think the pictures are well worth the paper.

Count me in too, on that bore polishing..I didn't use Flitz though..I have some Happich Simichrome on hand...

The polishing trick shortens break-in time and saves ammo.

O-ring is an easy but very helpful addition.

I found it truly remarkable, how the bore polishing helps immediately...
