cant hit squat
« on: June 06, 2006, 11:51:46 AM »
:D Hi im new to the sport. Yesterday I bought a Ruger SBH 44 mag with pachmyer grips and ultra dot scope used for $ 350 was this a good deal? Anyways I picked up some 200 grain CCI 44 specials and muffs and went to go play!! I was amazed that it didnt recoil at all but even from a bench couldnt keep em with in 10". bad bullets, bad scope, or do i  just suck! I have shot all my life and know to squeeze the trigger??

my first question is why are you trying to hit squat? you should be shooting at a target :-D

"bad bullets, bad scope, or do i just suck " Your problem could any one of these or a combination of them all and then some.

The 200 gr bullets are on the light side for a 44 mag most 44 mags like the heaver 240 and up, try some true 44 mag bullets, or your handgun may not like shooting 44 special

The sighting device could be bad remove it and use iron sight or put on a scope you know is good

You may need to learn how to hold the handgun, handguns are not like rifles and they do take a great deal of practice to get to shoot them well

you may also ask your self why did this guy sell this set up so cheap? could the barrel be bad, copper / lead build up and causing accuracy to go south, or is it shot out.

This is what I would do if I where you

1) take it to a good gun smith for a very good check up and bore sight the sighting device
2) if everything is good with the handgun get a box of 44 magnum shells and then try them you may have to try several brands and weights, if it still sing shooting good
3) get another scope and try it or use iron sights.

Was that 10" group at 25 yds, or 100 yds?  Do you have an experienced hangun shooting friend who could shoot the gun to see what he can do?  It would help to see if it's the gun/load or the operator.

Because Squat season is comming up and i want to be ready :) !! About 30 yards. Honestly, I am the one who has taught many of my friends to shoot and hunt so no big help there.

The pistol seems to be in great shape and i cleaned it thoughly, next i am going to try 44 mag 240 winchester jhp's and see if things clear up.

I bought the gun at a gun shop and the factory sights were not avalible. From what i have heard the ulta dots were great scopes though.

I did try lessing my grip and that did improve things quite abit but still not to my standards. I plan on shooting much more but being a poor college student has its limits money, time and space.

After Squat season is over I plan on shooting whitetails here in Arkansas. The deer here are not armor clad and weigh in at 120-170 range so 240s should be on the right track???

:cb2: Hey sigep538. Glad to have ya here at GBO.

Like Ricky said, each handgun is different as to what it likes. You could take two Ruger Blackhawks that came off the line, one right after the other, and they would shoot differently. One might shoot 240-gr. Winchester Silvertips the best, the other might shoot 240-gr. PMC SP the best. Both may or may not like the Federal 300-gr. CastCores, etc., etc., etc. It's just gonna take a lot of trial and error to find what shoots best. Talk to the guy you bought it from and ask him what he used. (Of course he may not have found a good load, and that's why he sold it thinking something was wrong with it.) Once you find your "serious business" load, keep a box on hand, and then get some cheap reloads and have a good time with it!

As for the scope, make sure everything is really tight. Ya sure can't have any wiggle anywhere. I took my regular scope off of mine, and put a red dot scope on it. Still not sure I did the right thing. Only time, and practice, will tell.

Again, like Ricky said, try it without the scope, too. You might like it better. (Depends a lot on how old you are, and how good you can still see!)

You mught also want to get some ear plugs at the drug store (usually cheaper there) and wear them along with your muffs. Your hearing is too valuable to lose, so use both!

The .44 mag is the most fun gun to shoot of all. Especially a single action. I prefer the Bisley grip, but you can't really go wrong with a good ole Blackhawk.

I'm glad you found GBO. There are a lot of guys here, tons smarter than me, and I'm sure you're gonna get some great pointers and advise. Good shootin'!

I have to agree with some of the other posts. It could be a combination of things.

How new to handguns are you? Just because it does not shoot well does not mean the gun is bad. The 200 gr. bullets I have tried were not that accurate and I went with 240 or 300 gr. bullets. I have been shooting handguns for about 35 years now and I still think I could improve my accuracy. My advice is try some different loads and see how you do or even let someone else shoot it and see how it shoots for them. My buddy told me he could not get his gun to shoot well, I shot it with the same ammo he was using and it shot like a dream.  :D  Just hang in there and try different things, also a lot of practice pays off.  :-D

:cb2: Hey ricky—shootin' squat is easier than trying to pick it up! However, it does make my neighbors uneasy when I take the dog for a walk!  :-D

Wow!  You guys are turrible to this newbie.  Welcome aboard sigep538

I would first remove the scope, it may have gone south on ya.  Also, dot type scopes are not the best for targetting guns.

Second, I would seriously think about reloading.  If you have to go a few extra shifts to get a couple of additional boxes of factory loads then reloading is something you may wish to seriously consider, if you do not reload already.

Those Rugers are known to be accurate sidearms and yours may prefer something other than slower moving 200 grain slugs.

If your groups do not improve with 44 magnum rounds I would first deal with the possibility of a bad scope.  HTH.  Mikey.

Even though you said that you cleaned the gun - I would check the bore for lead/copper fouling. A cheap way to get a good look at the bore is to put a wad of tissue/toilet paper into the muzzle about an inch or so. Shine a light into the muzzle and you will be able to see the condition of the bore. If you see gold color you have copper fouling, if you see gray streaks you have lead fouling.  Make sure you do this with an unloaded gun!! Make sure you remove the wad of paper when done!

Welcome sigep538 ... I shoot a S&W 629 Classic 6-1/2" revolver. It is new for me. I took Blazer .44 Special 200 grain GDHP's to the range, with a few other brand .44 magnums ... black Hills 240 grain, Remington 180 grain, Speer 200 grain, Speer 270 grain ... What I found was all shot pretty much the same group size (only 25 yards I know), but I really saw no great spread with the lighter bullets. The point of impact was different, but the overall group size was pretty much the same. I was shooting from a bench, with my hands resting on a bag.

From what folks are saying, I'm surprised now that I did not get greater variance ... that and I best repeat my test firing, by setting up a target at 50 yards.

Deal sounds good. Don't give up. Handgunning is a diffecult sport. Take persistant practice at the range.
