saw an unusual handi today
« on: June 06, 2006, 03:28:34 PM »
it was a .243 handi with green laminated pistol grip stocks with the monte carlo hump on it
with a tapered heavy barrel
but it has gold inlay on the right side of the receiver
it depicted a young jake turkey and said jakes out beside it
then a banner type scroll divided it from a depiction of three dear one massive non typical buck and two does
there was nothing on the stock, no coin, medallion or carving stating what type of commemorative it was
in not sure but i think the gun was used as i didnt see a box for it and it was laying behind the counter on another counter like it had just been taken in on a trade or something
it wasnt priced yet either but had the hang tag on it
anyways i just thought i would run this past you guys to see if anyone knew anything abt this type of shooter
if it had been anything but 243 i might have been interested in adopting it

The NWTF (National Wild Turkey Federation) offers limited edition firearms every year at their banquets, in 2001 I got a Jakes 9422 that has the engraving you speak of, earlier this year they had a .243 Ultra Varmint available at their auction, but it went too high for me. Jakes is for 12yrs and under NWTF members, hence the .243 caliber.

sureshot,

J.A.K.E.S. is the NWTF's youth program and stands for "Juniors Aquiring Knowledge, Ethics & Sportsmanship". Like quick said, but is for 16 and under. At least that is what it used to be when my kids were J.A.K.E.S. a few years ago. I bought my son a J.A.K.E.S. 20ga H&R Topper Junior Classic  with straight youth Camo Laminate checkered stock & forend back in '95 or '96. It also has gold inlay in the receiver and a gold NWTF medallion in the stock. That was the first H&R in the collection, but definitely not the last one, that is for sure.

Sounds like it was a nice rifle?

NWTF also has a great outfit for us cripples, old, and otherwise handicapped type hunters/shooters.

Called:  WheelinSportsmen

I joined a yr ago and they invited to join several others on a W/S'er elk hunt at No Charge!

Do wish I'd been able to go, but, first hunt was a week after I'd had back surgery and it was all I could do to get out of bed and sit in a chair.  The second hunt was in Jan two weeks after payday and I was broke.
Ain't life hell sometimes???

On these hunts, they are guided and there's volunteers to assist in anyway they can, including helping the hunters get around and into a blind, then after games down, they'll dress it out into any form you wish, including quartering it.

Great outfit, but, so far I've not gone with them yet.
IF you're handicapped in anyway, do yourself a big favor and contact them no matter where you live.
