30-30 Handi for $125.00, Good Deal?
« on: June 08, 2006, 04:14:35 PM »
I work part-time at a local shop and the owner said I could have a like new (looks brand new and unfired) Handi-Rifle in 30-30. This one has the Williams sights on the barrel and it also has a Tasco scope mounted on a Weaver base. It comes with a nylon padded sling (the ammo holding type) and a nylon butt cuff. It has a wood stock and forearm.

Is $125.00 a good deal? Can I send it in and have a 45-70 barrel installed? If so, can I then switch back and forth between the two barrels?

Thanks!

No idea on the serial number. What does the second letter denote?

What would a gun like this retail for?

I really don't have much use for it except putting the 45-70 barrel on it and that just to play with. I thought I might use it some this deer season though with either barrel. It's real light and "Handi"!

Thanks for the help!

The second letter denotes year of mfr, the Williams sight probably means it's a late model, but someone could have put it on too. NEF/H&R won't fit barrels to any rifle built before 1987, so knowing when it was built is important if you want a barrel fitted. Used Handis sell for ~$150.

New the 30-30 NEF is usually around $200 and that's with open sights, no scope base and no sling. I got a new one on sale 3 months ago for $170. So, $125 like new is a very good deal. They can be very accurate, especially if you handload and keep your loads within 30-30 pressure ranges with spire point bullets. I love my Marlin lever actions but that Handi 30-30 is one heck of a shooter even with round and flat point factory ammo.

Ok thanks guys. I will probably go ahead and pick it up then. Yeah, when I say like new, I mean it doesn't have a scratch on it and the bore looks mint. I don't think it has been fired since it left the factory.

How much does NEF charge to fit a new barrel? And can I put shotgun barrels on this reciever? What about black powder and rimfire?

Thanks again for all of the info!

You can have any of those barrels installed except the rimfire due to the firing pin on rimfires being off center.  Look under barrel accessory program on their website for prices.  I think you're going to really enjoy that Handi. Congrats on the good find!

I will probably sell the 30-30 barrel if I get the 45-70 barrel. I already have a Marlin 336 chambered for 30-30 so I don't really need another one. I will let you know.

As for the 45-70, what do these guns chambered for 45-70 like? I live in South Carolina and hunt Whitetail deer for the most part. I would LOVE to drop one with a 45-70 single shot!!

The .45-70 Handis and BCs like everything I've tried in em, from sedate trapdoor factory loads like the 300gr and 405gr Remingtons to PMC's 350gr +P loads and 300gr Nosler Partition handloads at 2400fps, even light loads like 28gr of 2400 and the 350gr Hornady at 1300fps or so shoot great. Good luck finding a load that doesn't shoot good in an NEF/H&R .45-70!!

OK sulaco, I would like to buy your 30-30 barrel if and when you do sell it, and by the way, quick has mentioned my all time favorite reload recipe for my 45-70 Handi, one I have spoken of here for a long time, 28.0 grains of 2400 behind a 350 grain Hornady RNFP bullet. Easy shooting, clean shooting, no recoil to speak of and big one hole cloverleaf groups!!!! It is a real good whitetail load....<><....

Well I decided not to get it afterall. Money is kind of tight and after looking at it long and hard all day today, I just couldn't bring myself to drop the cash on it. I need a scope for another rifle so I think I better keep saving.

If anyone is interested in it, let me know and I will email you the location. It's in SC but good luck getting it for as cheap as I could!

So buy it, sell the barrel/scope combo on eBay for $125, and when you have the $$ to spare, get another barrel fitted to the action.

I agree. Sale the barrel for a cool $100-sense it is new-  and you've already made most all your money back. And when your ready, send it off to get fitted for what you really want.
It's an excellent price, I would pick it up in a heart beat.
